Brent Bailey is the guy you always see on your tv, whether it’s in a commercial, a movie, or your favorite TV show, he is a face you tend to recognize. He has been actively acting for several years and he is on a rollercoaster that only goes up my friends. He is a very talented actor whose career, I’m sure, will continue for many, many years.
I have been a fan of his since he walked into Emma Woodhouse’s office in the web series Emma Approved nearly 2 years ago. It is my pleasure to introduce you all to Brent M. Bailey!
*PSA: If you haven’t seen Emma Approved yet there are spoilers below in Question #3.
(Katie Penix) Brent, thank you so much for taking the time to answer some of our questions. I would like to start with your introduction. Would you be willing to tell our audience a little bit about yourself?
(Brent Bailey) Hi! ☺ I am Brent Bailey and some of you may know me from playing Alex Knightley on “Emma Approved!” Originally I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and I was a computer programmer. Right after I finished up with my MBA I decided I wanted to quit my day job and pursue a dream job. I moved to LA with no idea what I was about to get myself into. One of my best friends, Harley Jay, had been in LA for a few years already and helped me figure out the best steps to take to become an actor. At the beginning I worked as a manager at Blockbuster Video, which helped pay my bills. After about four years I finally gained enough momentum to no longer need a day job, and became a full-time actor!
(KP) I absolutely loved Emma Approved. Can you tell us about what it was like working on the web series? What did you enjoy the most about playing Alex Knightley?
(BB) The whole thing was surreal. Being on a show with such a large fan base, amazing actors and great writers is a dream. The whole cast and crew became a family and getting together once a month to film was the best weekend of the month. Knightley was so familiar to me, because the character and I really are almost the same person. That made coming to work even more fun, because it was just easy!
(KP) Would you be willing to share a little behind the scenes stuff with us? Do you have a favorite episode and/or moment in the show?
(BB) I honestly don’t think I could pick just one day. So many different moments of filming hold very special places in my heart. I think if I had to pick a favorite episode, I’d say when Alex and Emma finally get together. I am a sucker for romantic comedies and happy endings. ☺
*As a side note, this is my favorite episode also. Just wanted to throw that out there.
(KP) The series won an Emmy Award last year, which is amazing, can you talk about that moment? Congratulations, btw!!!!
(BB) Unexpected! Amazing! Wonderful! Honestly, no words can really explain hearing that a show you poured your heart into won an Emmy. It’s the highest compliment we could have been given for our hard work. The best part is, we did it as a team, and that’s what we got the Emmy for.
(KP) You have guest starred, co-starred, and been a season regular on a number of TV shows. What has been your favorite role or roles? What was your most challenging role or roles?
(BB) I have been really fortunate to work on a lot of projects and each one comes with it’s own challenges and perks. My first job was in the Rascal Flatt’s Music Video for “Take Me there.” I think that one holds a special place in my heart because it was my first real gig. That being said, working alongside Joanna Sotomura in Emma Approved was a dream, alongside Woody Harrelson in LBJ was incredible and each new project meeting new talented individuals is just inspiring. It’s kind of funny, but I’d say the hardest thing I had to do was play dead on Criminal Minds while they had a scene above my body. You’d think that’d be easy, but to not breathe, move your eye lids or be able to move for 3+ minutes is pretty hard!
*Brent was in Criminal Minds S9 E7 “Gatekeeper” Directed by Matthew Gray Gubler -> Just in case you wanted to know
(KP) You have starred in a number of films, what do you find the most enjoyable and the most challenging about starring in movies? What has been your favorite role so far?
(BB) My favorite film so far has been LBJ, for many reasons. 1) Filming in New Orleans for 5 weeks was AMAZING! There is just so much going on there! The food, the people, the culture and the MUSIC! It really is an awesome place to shoot. 2) Working with Woody Harrelson is exactly what you’d expect it to be… INCREDIBLE! He is the most down to earth, genuine, extremely funny and supportive person. He is considerate about other people as well as the environment, and he treats everyone he encounters as if they were family. 3) Rob Reiner… A legend! Being with him on set, taking direction from him, watching him work… I can’t even explain how cool that was. 4) My new friends… I met so many great actors on that shoot that I now call friends. We had fun adventures in New Orleans and will continue to have more adventures in LA and hopefully will work together again in the future.
(KP) The Kay Jewelers commercial you did with Joanna Sotomura was beautiful. Can you talk a little about that?
(BB) Any time I get a chance to act with Joanna Sotomura, I will. She is such an amazing actor and an even better human. We have so much fun whenever we are acting together, and shooting that commercial was no different. Spending a day with her is always an absolute pleasure, and it’s been fun to see the commercial airing so much.
(KP) You’ve posted about traveling, scuba diving, surfing, and hiking, what you you love most about being outdoors? You also have a talent for photography, what do you like about taking pictures? Do you have a favorite photo you’ve taken?
(BB) I think it’s very easy to get caught up in everyday life, and it is easy to forget what’s important. When you get out in nature and you’re camping or surfing, or diving or whatever it is… It makes you take a step back and really think about your life and what you want out of it. That’s what I enjoy the most. I have a very active brain that is always thinking about a billion things. So when I can put myself in a situation where I can just be at peace, it’s the best. As for photography, I just love capturing a person in those little vulnerable and real moments when their guard is down and they are just being themselves! I don’t particularly have a favorite photograph that I’ve taken; I just love the whole process. It’s also fun to be behind the camera for a change.
(KP) Do you have any new projects on the horizon that we should be on the lookout for? You said you were in Chile filming. And LBJ should be out soon, correct?
(BB) Yes! I actually have a lot of stuff coming up. I recently shot a movie for Mar Vista called “Merry Exes” that will hopefully be available this Christmas. My other feature “LBJ” that I shot with Woody Harrelson will hopefully come out later this year. I have a few new commercials that are in post and will air throughout this year and next year. I am signed onto a new web series called “Personal Space” that will start filming this summer, and I am currently in Hawaii shooting a new movie for Mar Vista called “A Midsummers Hawaiian Dream.” Being in Hawaii shooting a movie is pretty much the best combination of things I could ask for.
