Introduction to From Jabba To Thor

Wait! What is the title of this post? A weight loss post on Temple of Geek? No, you are not going crazy. This is a post about weight loss. More specifically, my weight loss.

From Jabba To Thor
April 2017 – Taken at Fan Expo Dallas. Finally met Mark Hamill and I looked like this!!

On the morning of January 1st 2018, I weighed the most I have ever weighed in my life. I stepped on a scale and the numbers that showed up on the screen made me disgusted. I weighed 449lbs. That is not the weight of a healthy person. Prior to stepping on the scale, months earlier, my doctor told me that I was diabetic. I could not believe what I just heard. Did my doctor tell me I just had Type II Diabetes and it was my fault?

So I am diabetic and I am morbidly overweight, what was I going to do? As it turns out, My office was doing a “Biggest Loser” challenge from January 1st through March 31st, and I decided to participate. I stepped on that scale and had my weight documented. I made a promise to myself that I was going to lose this weight.

I started to log everything I put in my mouth using an application on my phone called “Lose It.” This helped me track what I was eating and plan my day better for meals so I did not exceed my daily calorie needs. The weight started to come off. It was glorious! By March 31st, I lost 50lbs (and won the challenge)! Since that last weigh in, I have lost 7 more pounds and currently weigh 392lbs. Even though I am still using the app, I think I might have plateaued.

At 392lbs. This will be my starting point on this challenge.

To continue losing weight, it is time that I push myself even harder. I decided to create myself a challenge. I am calling this challenge “From Jabba to Thor”. I am going to push myself to become as close to Chris Hemsworth’s version of Thor that I possibly can by May 22nd 2019. I will be 40 years old.

Now, I know what you are thinking, there is no way to become Chris Hemsworth in 1 year. I realize that. The goal is to see how close I can get. I will be using modified versions of the work out routine that Hemsworth did to prepare for his role. One of the articles I read stated that he worked out for 90 minutes a day. I will use that as a starting point for myself as well.

The Plan

Exercise:

Mondays-

Mornings – Walk for 45 minutes (until I can start jogging again)

Evenings – Upper body training at Planet Fitness

Tuesdays-

Mornings – Walk for 45 minutes (until I can start jogging again)

Evenings – Lower body training at Planet Fitness

Wednessdays-

Mornings – Walk for 45 minutes (until I can start jogging again)

Evenings – Elliptical for 45 minutes at Planet Fitness

Thursdays-

Mornings – Walk for 45 minutes (until I can start jogging again)

Evenings – Upper body training at Planet Fitness

Fridays-

Mornings – Walk for 45 minutes (until I can start jogging again)

Evenings – Lower body training at Planet Fitness

Weekends – Rest

Diet:

Find my maintenance calories and subtract 500 calories from it to find my daily intake. The Lose It app pretty much does that for me. Once I get into this, I plan on scheduling time with a nutritionist to ensure that I am eating the right foods. For now though, this is a good start to get started on this journey.

Keeping Myself Accountable

I am starting this plan on Monday the 7th of May 2018 and will continue through May 22nd 2019. I plan to keep you, the audience, updated on my progress. I promise to keep my posts geek related and fun. I have not decided if this will be a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly post yet. I will be posting to my personal Twitter (@Slade_Tog) and Instagram (@dannielslade) accounts for all the goings and not so goings with this challenge. All posts will use the hashtag #FromJabbaToThor.

From Jabba To Thor

I hope that throughout this journey, I might be able to inspire other geeks who might be over weight to take charge and start their transformation. I believe we can all be like Thor and I am here to prove it.
