CON COVERAGE: Greater Austin Comic Con 2018

Posted by

For its first year, Greater Austin Comic Con came to Cedar Park, Texas this past June 16th through June 17th 2018. The guest list had stars from Flash Gordon, Power Rangers and more. Greater Austin Comic Con had a lot to do for fans and families alike. Temple of Geek was there on Saturday and we have a lot to cover. So let’s get started!

The Venue

Greater Austin Comic Con was held at the HEB Convention Center. The center has the capacity for entertainment events that can range from 2,500 for theatre style events up to 8,700 guests for concerts. That means that there was plenty of space for a mid size convention. This convention, as with others, had a heavy emphasis on security. Metal detectors were at all the entrances. Bag checks were also done, so there was no reason to feel unsafe upon entering the convention center.

The show was packed! That was a good thing. During the 1st half of the day, it was a little hard to walk the main floor. It was sometimes hard to look at the vendor’s booths as the walk ways were filled with people. I spoke with numerous vendors and they were quite pleased with the traffic.

The main show was located on the arena floor. The arena contained the main vendor hall, the celebrity guests, and the main stage for panels. The outer ring of the convention center had booths for the cosplay guest, eateries, and various other booths.

The Guest List

What is a convention without guests? GACC had guests from all types of movies, television shows, and anime. From Power Rangers, Johnny Young Bosch (Adam), Walter Jones (Zach), and David Fielding (Zordon). There were guests from Flash Gordon, Sam Jones (Flash) and Melody Anderson (Dale). Dragon Ball Z had a strong showing with Sean Schemmel (Goku), Sonny Strait (Krillin), and Cynthia Cranz (Chi Chi).

Other guests included Tony Dodd (Candy Man), Doug Jones (Hellboy), Kevin Sorbo (Hecules), John Wesley Shipp (The Flash), Paul Blake (Star Wars A New Hope),Eva Bella & Livvy Stubenrauch (Frozen), and Kathryn Leigh-Scott (Dark Shadows). As you can see, there were plenty of guests to visit and chat with.

One thing I appreciated the most about this convention was that guests were approachable and friendly. Lines to get to any of the actors were short and pleasant. At anytime, you were just minutes away from chatting with any of these fine guests.

The Panels

What better way to get to know the celebrity guests then to attend one of their panels. Temple of Geek only attended three of the many celebrity panels that were happening on Saturday. The first panel that we attended was Flash Gordon. Sam Jones and Melody Anderson were great as they talked about their time on set. At one point, Sam Jones was walking around stage lifting speakers to check the volume levels. They made a joke out of it as he commented about having OCD.

The second panel that we attended was Kevin Sorbo. He talked about his time on Hercules and Stargate Andromeda. The final panel was the Power Rangers panel where the stage had two Black Rangers and Zordon. It was fun panel where they talked about how they got on the show.

The Cosplay

The cosplay is what we came for and GACC did not disappoint. There were so many representations of Batman from all eras, Odin, Amazonians, Black Panther and more. Hell, I had to do a double take as there was a Charlie Sheen cosplay that looked too good to be true. GI JOE was represented thanks in part to the Fightin’ 788th. To see the full range of cosplayers and fandoms represented at the con, you can check out our cosplay gallery.

The Overall

Greater Austin Comic was a fantastic convention for being a first year con. While we did not get to attend both days, Saturday was absolutely amazing. We are looking forward to next years convention.

The dates for 2019 have not been announced, but you can found out all you need to know about the con, the guests, and more by heading to their site. If you are in the Austin area, or even the Central Texas area, this is a con worth checking out.
