The mastermind behind this insane Scavenger Hunt that I have been participating in for the past 2 years is Misha Collins. That would be the same Misha Collins from Supernatural. Our dear Castiel.
But the real question is WHAT THE HELL is GISHWHES? Yes it is a scavenger hunt, but what is it?
GISHWHES is a scavenger hunt that takes place this year during the First week of August (August 1-8). The beauty of this hunt is that it can take place anywhere in the world, even from your own home. This hunt is about creativity, imagination, kindness, and not being afraid to make a damn fool out of yourself in hopes of completing an item.
I dressed as Zombie and went to the supermarket to buy toilet paper. (No Joke people are oblivious to their surroundings)
Sometimes the items require a Stormtrooper…. I see no issues with that.
Thousands of people from all over the world create their own teams with their friends or sign up as an individual to be placed on a 15-person team. That is how I first joined. I was an individual who was placed on a team with others from the US and other countries. And now we have nearly a full team 3 years later. Friendships are instantly created through this hunt.
The hunt is a week-long. You will work hard, you will laugh, you will cry, you will get frustrated, and you will curse Misha’s name so many times during the week, but you will have more fun than you ever thought you could. You will do whatever it takes to complete items on the list (LEGALLY of course) and you may even inspire others. We break world records and create ridiculously, jaw-dropping works of “art.” The list is massive, but never completely impossible. Some stuff is though, seriously some items are RIDICULOUS!
The goal: The team that scavenges the most items with the highest quality of submissions will join Misha Collins on an all-expenses paid trip to that years exotic locale. This years prize is a trip with Misha to Costa Rica for volcanos, rainforests, and gishwhes-style discotecking (Not even the website can explain that the hell that is, but I’m sure it is FANTASTIC). And I want to go!
Registration costs $18.89, but if you can’t afford that DON’T PANIC!
Just register for a Gishscholarship, which are voluntarily gifted by other GISHWHES participants granting that person free registration. GISHWHES will match EVERY gishscholarship gifted.
Awesome right! Kindness is awesome!
Anyways back to the hunt:
Items are recorded as videos or images that are then uploaded to the website to document you teams Gishwhes experience, but it also give the judges something to judge. Otherwise, how else could there be a winner. The more creative and superb a submission is the more points you are awarded, hell you can even get BONUS POINTS for how awesome it is. It’s about Quality, not Quantity. Well its a little about quantity, so basically complete a LOT of the items in a high-quality manner.
That would be last years mascot the Elopus created on a cup of coffee. AWESOME!
Items can be sweet and kind, such as “doing a random act of kindness for a strange and recording the result” to the strange “dress up farm animals like your favorite supernatural characters”
to the impossible “Get “GISHWHES conquers space” or “GISHWHES [insert other clever phrase]” written on or in something orbiting in space.” Apparently someone was able to do this one…. HOW THE HELL…. never mind.
Trust me when I say that you don’t need to be the most artistic, creative, or people interacting lover of attention because I am ABSOLUTELY none of the above, but I do have dedication to my team, imagination, and determination. Those are enough a lot of the time to get items done, but believe me having artistically creative people on your team is a HUGE BONUS!!!!!!
Such as having someone on your team that can create a portrait of Captain Picard out of condiments.
The list is challenging, but the hunt wouldn’t be worth it if it wasn’t. GISHWHES is all about breaking out of normalcy. Seriously, what is fun about being normal. GISHWHES shows the world that it’s okay to be weird and that kindness to others is one of the most important things. We have done impossible things, made friends that will last a life time, BROKEN WORLD RECORDS, annoyed NASA, been mentioned on the news, and convinced William Shatner to create a team!
GISHWHES is also about charity and like I’ve said kindness. GISHWHES is a proud supporter of Random Acts. This is a brilliant organization that makes it their mission to perform random acts of kindness around the world.
Do you want to be a part of this? THERE IS STILL TIME! 4 weeks left actually to register.

Sign-up. Create a team or take the plunge as an individual and get placed on a team. Who knows maybe that team will win. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
Break the rules of normalcy and be abnosome – totally a word we made up in GISHWHES it stands for Abnormally Awesome.
I’ve been held hostage by teddy bears in my garage.
My sister rode a stuffed camel in our backyard while using her phone GPS to find water (We took some artistic license and interpretation with this item) IT WAS THE LAST DAY OF THE HUNT AND WE WERE DESPERATE. Sorry, but it’s true. Just keep in mind the judges tend to frown on interpretation of the items. If it says ride a camel, they mean a REAL camel. Whatever, that picture is awesome!
I made an entire FORMAL DINING SET out of LEGOs then had a meal on it with my family. (UGH, one of the most frustrating items ever. LEGOs are the enemy now.)
And we have done so much more. In the end, all the laughter, smiles, tears, sweat, and frustration was worth it. No, my team has never won, but it’s not about winning, it’s about what you do and the friendships you create as the result. But winning WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!
Please join. You will have fun and you won’t regret it, well you might a little during the hunt, but just curse Misha’s name and move on.
I’ll be out there with my team, Team Mishaburgers, completing items and concurring the world with the other GISHWHES teams at our side.
JOIN THE HUNT!
