While many were out shopping and going crazy over the Black Friday sale, a select few were waiting for history to be made. The world was given a glimpse of the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise. Many got to see this teaser on the big screen and many more watched it today online. I myself have watched it over and over again throughout today to get an understanding of what is taking place in these quick short glimpses. In case you have been living under a rock and have not seen the trailer yet:
The Teaser’s Opener
The teaser starts with a voice over; “There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?” Who is the man behind the voice over? Is it Max Von Sydow’s character? Who is this character talking to? All of the sudden John Boyega pops up on screen decked out in Storm Trooper gear. The first thing I noticed were the minor details in the new costume. The textures on the black underliners is just a small touch that shows how much attention has gone into the new vision of this galaxy far, far away. Boyega definitely looks lost or confused in this scene. Rumors state that he is rescued by a junker played by Daisy Ridley.
There is Another…
Ridley’s character is a junker that is working on an Outer Rim desert planet (Tatoonie?). She is the second main character along side Boyega. Rumor has it that she stumbles across a lightsaber belonging to Luke Skywalker. In the teaser, we see a close up of her face and costume. We also get a good view of her nifty looking speeder. These shots show the love that JJ has for this franchise. This scene shows her heading toward a town that we know of from the set photos TMZ revealed back in June.
Now This Is Pod Racing
It looks as if R2-D2 and C-3PO will not be the only droids in the new film. This little guy seems to be in a hurry to either get to or get away from something. This droid is rumored to be somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife of weapons and other devices to assist our heroes. Although a name has not been revealed yet, I am sure this droid will give Artoo a run for his money. In this scene, pod racing parts can be seen in the back ground. JJ, I am okay with references to the prequels, just please just don’t use midichlorians in this film.
Only Imperial Stormtroopers Are So Precise
Just take one minute to look at the beauty of these guys. Go ahead, I’ll wait. These costumes are absolutely amazing and do the Stormtroopers justice. This scene confuses me though. Is the Empire in fact, still intact after the Battle of Endore? Did the New Republic decide to continue using soldiers for their “Grand Army”? What ever the reason, just know that these guys look like they are a force to be reckoned with. In this scene, they are landing somewhere during what looks to be a nighttime raid. Could they be looking for a certain lost Stormtrooper?
Red Leader, This is Rouge Five
Just like with the Stormtroopers, go ahead and take a minute to take these scenes in. LOOK AT THAT REBEL PILOT!!! This is some awesome, AWESOME costume designs. The X-Wings look amazing! There appears to be some minor changes to the design of the X-Wings. The top section of the “X” appears to be the back side of the wing when lowered with the front bottom wing. These are minor changes that gives the ship a modern look. I am still amazed that these are the fighters that the New republic ended up using. You would think that there would be a new fighter after 30+ years. Why is the Rebel emblem being used? Is this the New Republic’s adopted emblem or is their still some sort of galactic war going on?
Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes
The Ship That Made The Kessel Run In Under 12 Parsecs
The teaser ends with the Star Wars medley playing over scenes of the Falcon flying. These scenes are absolutely breath taken. The way the shots follow the Falcon around and into the on-coming fire of Imperial Tie Fighters is something that you would not have seen with George Lucas. This scene shows me amazing visuals and some really awesome fighter scenes to come. The Falcon looks great with a new touch of paint and some maroon highlights. Is it possible that this is not the Falcon but a new ship modeled after the Corellian freighter? It was taken as a joke back in June with JJ leaving a note stating that the Millennium Falcon is not in the movie, but is it possible he was telling the truth and this is a new ship after all?
The End
The teaser ends with the title card for the movie and the release date of the film. The teaser clocks in at 88 seconds. Just long enough for me to get a small taste of what Mr. Abrams has in store for me next December. We are going to start getting a lot more information this year once post production wraps. We will know more about the characters, settings, and story. This small taste looks like a step in the right direction. I am really happy with this teaser and can’t wait to get back to the galaxy George Lucas built.
