My Favorite Moments of Game of Thrones Season 6 Finale (Spoilers)

Posted by

Game of Thrones wrapped its 6th season up on Sunday. ThisĀ episode was filled to the brim with goosebumps inducing moments. I wanted to write about my top 5 favorite moments of this episode. Advanced warning, this post will contain spoilers. So if you have not seen it yet, come back after watching the finale.

5. Jon Snowā€™s Mother is revealed

There has been a popular theory circulatingĀ on the internet whereĀ Jon Snow is not the son of Ned Stark, but is in fact the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This episode has partially confirmed this theory with the reveal that Lyanna Stark is in fact his mother. Now we still donā€™t know who the father is but I feel that we can safely assume heĀ will be revealed asĀ Rahaegar Targaryen.

With this knowledge, we can now safely assume that Jon is going to be one of the contenders for the Iron Throne. Jon literally embodies the Song of Ice and Fire with his parents coming from both the Starks and the Targaryens respectively.

The question I have going into Season 7 is what kind of rift between the remaining Stark children will occur once Bran reveals this information?

4. Cersei Lannister ā€“ The Mad Queen

In one of the biggest WTF moments in theĀ shows history, Cersei wiped out all of her opponents in one fail swoop. We have known that wildfire caches have been storedĀ below the city of Kingā€™s Landing. We also knew that Cersei has been growing mad after being humiliated by the High Sparrow and the death of her daughter.

Since her son outlawed ā€˜trial by combatā€™, Cersei knew that she that she was not going to get a happy outcome in the trial. So, Cersei did the only thing she knew how to do, win any way you can. She managed to take out all her opposed her with a plan that would make ā€˜The Mad Kingā€™ blush.

We saw the death of Grand Maester Pycelle at the hands of Qyburnā€™s child spies. We witnessed Margaery Tyrell, her brother Loras, her father Mace, The High Sparrow, Lancel and Kevan Lannister, and all of the Sparrow followers go up in a green flame. Cersei is one woman you do not want to have on your bad side.

One death that was not part of the plan was the suicide of King Tommen Baratheon. The death of his wife and his new mentor, the High Sparrow, was too much for him to bear. Without anyone there to consul him, Tommen decided to take his own life. This final death fulfilled the prophecy that was revealed to Cersei early in her life that all of her children would die.

We saw the crazy in Cerseiā€™s eyes when the crown was being placed upon her head by Qyburn in the closing parts of the episode. Her brother Jaime, who made it to the coronation, had a sense of dread when he witnessed his sister being crowned queen. What will this do with their relationship in the future seasons?

3. Arya Starkā€™s Red Wedding Revenge

In the third season, we witnessed the deaths of two prominent Starks, Rob and Catelyn and the hands of Walder Fray. This massacre was dubbed the ā€œRed Weddingā€ and shocked a lot of fans of the show. Many wondered when the Stark family would finally get revenge against the Frays.

Revenge was finally had when Arya Stark returned to Westeros. One would have to question if Arya is becoming a little mad herself. Not only did she slice Walderā€™s throat and smiled upon him as he bled out, but it was what she did prior to his death that was the most shocking.

A young woman served Walder a meat pie. As he consumed the pie, he questioned where his sons were. SheĀ replied that they were there. He questioned where in castle they were located. She again replied that they were right there. In a scene that can only be described as something from a horror movie, Walder learns that his sons were baked into his pie. The young woman removes her face and reveals herself as Arya Stark.

It was satisfying knowing that she got her revenge against the Frays, but it is also disturbing to witness her transformation from an innocent girl into a cold hearted assassin. We know that her meeting with Jon and Sansa is imminent now that she is back in Westeros. What will this reunion do to her? CanĀ she return from this dark place or is she lost forever?

2. Tyrion Lannister ā€“ Hand of the Queen

Tyrion has been dealt a bad hand on numerous occasions. He was born a dwarf. His family, with the exception of Jaime, hates him. He was blamed for the death of his mother. He was framed for the death of his nephew Joffrey. His one true love was hooking up with his father. Oh, and he killed his father so has been on the run ever since.

He met up with Daenerys Targaryen in season 5 and vowed to provide her consult on matters. She did not trust him at first but eventually came around when she learned that he tried to keep Mareen up and running during her absence. This episode finally shows that Daenerys has come to fully trust Tyrion.

I felt that we are finally starting to see Tyrion in a good place. It was an epic moment seeing Daenerys present Tyrion with pin of the Hand of the Queen. Also, seeing him standing next to DaenerysĀ on the ship was very satisfying because we knowĀ that he is going to be bringing the pain to Cersei. These two are going to be an unstoppable force once they reach Westeros. Has Tyrion completely given up his Lannister heritage in favor of the Mother of Dragons.

1. Ā Jon Snow ā€“ King of the North

This was hands down my favorite moment of the episode. Here is the ā€œbastardā€ son of a nobleman that was sent to serve with the Nightā€™s Watch. He worked his way up to Lord Commander only to have his brothers stab him to death. He is then brought back to life and leaves the watch to take back Winterfell. He defeats Ramsey and takes back the keep.

He felt that Sansa should become Lady of the North due because she was able toĀ recruit the aid of the Knights of the Vale. Ā He believed that he was not worthy to lead due to his status of being a Bastard. Little Finger even tried to convince Sansa of this very fact stating that the people of the North would not follow a Bastard.

Well, the people of the North proved Little FingerĀ wrong, with a little ā€œencouragementā€ from Lady Mormont. After Mormont exclaims ā€œI donā€™t care if heā€™s a bastard or not, he is my King in the north,ā€ Manderly, Glover and the other Lords of the North started to pledge their allegiance to Jon Snow, King of the North.

Will the people of the north still unite behind him after they discover that he is not the bastard son of Eddard Stark?

The pieces are set for the battle of the Iron Throne and the battle with the White Walkers. I cannot wait for season 7 to see how this story will wrap up. What were your favorite moments from this season finale? We want to hear from you. Tell us by commenting below.
