At the beginning of the episode, I was a little concerned we were going to see another boring origins story. Good kid, someone hurts his mommy, he goes wack job. Man oh man, the Gotham writers did not disappoint me though.
When Gerome is being questioned in the beginning, he is the perfect balance of doting son and aware that his mom had a couple of flaws. Making Gordon uncomfortable was a delightful little bonus that I didn’t expect before he went crazy sauce. I will say Mr. Ciscero wigged me out much earlier than Gerome did. He had Joker teeth, which was much more pleasing when he turned out to be the Joker baby daddy.
By the time we ended up in the interrogation room toward the end, I had started to wonder if they were just teasing the Joker, which honestly I was absolutely okay with. Then his face when he was accused. He looked genuinely heart broken and confused. I wondered if we were going to see him go the vengeance route. Many times we hear that Joker and Batman are two sides of the same coin. I started to think we were going to see them have the same origin, with vengeance turning one of them malevolent and the other righteous.
It was when he looked down at the table that my skin started to crawl. I knew that cry was about to turn in to a cackle and I wasn’t even remotely disappointed. His face morphing from innocence to evil. And. That. Laugh. Everything in the interrogation scene went from 0-100 in two seconds flat and it was everything I needed to to be.
Then that was it, and that is why I have changed my initial stance on how I felt about The Joker being introduced. He wasn’t a focus, he wasn’t the most important part of the episode, and things carried on after he was taken in to custody. We don’t even hear what happens to him. We got the carrot dangled, but we still got the focus of Gordon, and on, and excuse me for this…
THE MOTHER [EXPLETIVE] GRAYSONS! DID YOU SEE THEM?! DID YOU?! LOOK AT HIM HIS SON IS GONNA LOOK JUST LIKE HIM AND LOOK AT HER COSTUME!!! LOOK AT IT!!!
Sorry (nope). My point is: He came, he saw, he creeped us out, and that was it. I liked the taste without the focus, and now I very much look forward to seeing him again. Later.
What did you think, Gothamites? Did you want more? Did you want less? Did you disagree with literally every word written here? Let’s talk!
