Today’s topic will take us away from Star Wars The Force Awakens and into the future. I am talking about the first film in the new Anthology series titled Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

What do we know about this film? We know that the film tells the story of resistance fighters who team up to steal the plans to the first Death Star. The movie will be released on December 16, 2016. Kathleen Kennedy gives her take on what the film is…

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

So who is this Extraordinary ensemble cast you ask? Below is the cast as listed on starwars.com.

Felicity Jones, nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in The Theory of Everything; Diego Luna, who was featured in 2008’s Oscar-winning Milk and 2013’s Elysium;

Ben Mendelsohn, recently nominated for an Emmy for his leading role in Bloodline and co-starring in the upcoming Mississippi Grind; Donnie Yen, Hong Kong action star and martial artist who starred in Ip Man and Blade II;

Jiang Wen, who co-wrote, produced , directed and starred in the award-winning Let the Bullets Fly and Devils on the Doorstep;

Forest Whitaker, recently featured in the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels’ The Butler and winner of an Academy Award for his leading role in 2006’s The Last King of Scotland;

Mads Mikkelsen, who starred in The Hunt and was the memorable villain from 2006’s Casino Royale;

Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in Rogue One, stars in the soon-to-be-released Con Man series and Trumbo, which releases this November;

Riz Ahmed, who was recently featured in Nightcrawler and starred in the BAFTA-winning film Four Lions.

This will be one of the first Star Wars films that take place outside of the Saga (No, I am not counting the Ewok films). Since this has nothing to do with the Skywalker family directly, here are five things that I want to see in this film.

  1. Space Fighter Dogfights – One thing that any good Star Wars film needs is an epic space battles. Give me some epic spacecraft combat. I want to see one X-Wing go against 20 Tie Fighters and survive! I want to see fighters flying around giant capital ships. This is Star Wars, lets see the Wars of the Stars.
  2. Ties to the Prequels – We know that this is the first Death Star so lets see Geonosis or some other references to the prequel trilogy. They happened people, get over it and lets tie it all together.
  3. References to Heroes – This is before the Battle of Yavin so we most likely wont hear Luke’s name dropped, but lets hear about Leia or Bail Organa. Hell, they could even mention some of the cast from Star Wars Rebels and I would be happy.
  4. NO Jedi – This is a film about fighter pilots. I don’t want to see Jedi or Sith running around. I want a good old fashioned war movie in Space!
  5. WAR!!! – I cannot express this enough. This is right after the rise of the Empire. Let’s see what war looks like from the perspective of the civilian. I want to see moms and dads rising up against the empire. This will give us a better perspective of what the war was actually like for people who did not have the Force as their ally.

There you have it. The five things I want to see in this new movie. Let me know what you think about this list. Is there anything you want to see? Let me know by commenting below.
