From 1997 until 2003, the teen supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer delivered some of the best television ever broadcast. A wealth of imagination, wit, humour, drama and heartache were at the heart of Joss Whedon’s iconic creation.
To pick ten episodes is surely crazy, because running at 144 episodes means there are A LOT of great episodes, but this is a personal list, so if you’re favourite is not here, don’t be offended, I’m not taking anything away from an episode you love, in fact I’m probably kicking myself for not including it; there are quite a high number that could be listed as an honourable mention.
Sitting down to watch Buffy was always an event, the series made its mark on not only popular culture, but in terms of how a work of television such as it could be read in a more scholarly way and even if you feel the urge to make fun of its fashions or 90’s look, its writing has ensured it has aged brilliantly. To think it stemmed from a movie failure, the series would go on to become a critical and audience favourite, put its television network on the map and pave the way for its creator to go on and direct one of the biggest movies of all time.
