If you’re a fan of the television series, Doctor Who, you will most certainly enjoy this FANTASTIC new tune by musician, Form Cartwright. The song is called Doctor Who Bars. It’s wonderfully arranged lyrics are from start to finish a beautiful nod to the characters and story lines on Doctor Who. We were lucky enough to chat with Form Cartwright about what inspired him to write this song.
Tell us about yourself:
My rap name is Form Cartwright and I’m 31. I’ve been rapping since I was 13 yrs old. My friends and I would battle in the lunch room. We also cut class(not all the time haha) to spit the rhymes we wrote from the night before.
That’s how I honed my skills.
What inspired you to create a Doctor Who themed song?
The idea started when an old friend of mine pointed out that I had two tracks on my Soundcloud, with
Doctor Who metaphors, simultaneously. I laughed because I didn’t realize it until he said so. See the thing is, I think I subconsciously wanted to record a track
filled with, “Who” lines already..I just didn’t have the guts. But after he said that, I was like, “I guess its time to get to work”.
How long did it take you to create this? What was the process like?
Well it took me about 4 months(off and on) to write the track. But before that, I spent some time just swirling some ideas around; I was thinking of different ways
to approach the song, because I knew that I wouldn’t hear the end of it…if it came out wack that is.
How long have you been a Whovian? What is it about Doctor Who that you love?
I actually became a Whovian kinda late..maybeeee around 2013??? To tell you the truth I avoided the franchise for awhile, only because I saw people
online dressed in bowties, and chuck taylor’s and shit. Its nothing wrong with that, but it just had such a cult following, and I didn’t wanna jump on the bandwagon. I remember one day, I was channel surfing and
saw a glimpse of the episode with the Toby Jones character…I believe its called, “Amy’s choice”; And they were all running from the old folks. I literally remember saying,
“nahhhhh” and turned instantly hahaha. But one day I sat down and watched, “The Eleventh Hour”, when The Doctor first met Amy as a child, and it got me..I mean..it..just..got me.
Everything from their interaction to the background music, something just clicked with me. It was whimsical, yet creepy. See I’m a movie buff, and it reminded me of the 80’s and 90’s flicks that I cherished when
I was younger. I can go on and on but I won’t hahaha.
Do you have other songs about other fandom that you’ve written?
When it comes to my songs I make sure I put comic/pop culture references in them, simply because I am a child of Television…It practically raised me. So you can listen to the majority of my
tracks and find something. But I do have a song coming out called, “Mxypltlk” based off of one of superman’s villains.
Do you write any other type of music?
Yea. I write r&b and pops songs
What’s next for you in the future? What are hopes for your music?
I have an ep sampler that I did in the summer of 2016 that I’m adding songs to. I’m making it into a complete mixtape. As for the Doctor Who song, my goal was to get people to dissect it, name their
favorite line, you know, just have fun with it. I also plan to make a lyric video soon too…maybe even an actual video, it all depends. If possible, I wanted to perform it at Wizardcon or Comiccon, since I’ve never been. One
can dream, nah mean?
