After an undeniably turbulent year for actors, the Screen Actor Guild Awards seems to not only be a welcome excuse to celebrate but also a return to normalcy after an 118-day strike. The nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani last week via Instagram Live. Like the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, the SAG Awards bring together the worlds of film and television, focusing the best on acting and stunt performances of 2023. Unlike the other two award shows however, the guild membership votes for the actors who are nominated and win, thus making the award a unique one since the honor comes from one’s peers.
Geeky favorite and video game-turned-TV phenomenon “The Last of Us” scored four SAG nominations. Lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were individually nominated in their respective “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series” categories, and also scored a joint nomination for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.” Pascal and Ramsey are the smallest ensemble nominated with only two people. The stunt ensemble from the show also received a nomination for “Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series”. However, “The Last of Us” stunt ensemble will have stiff competition in their category, given that both of the stunt teams on “Ahsoka” and “The Mandalorian” are nominated as well.
On the feature film side, box office and critical darling “Barbie” also racked up four nominations. “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are nominated for their portrayals as the iconic Barbie and Ken dolls, while the cast and stunt teams on the film were also nominated. However, unlike “The Last of Us”, the ensemble for Barbie comprises ten actors, and includes everyone from America Ferrera who played the human Gloria, Helen Mirren as the film’s narrator, Will Ferrell as the oddball Mattel CEO, and even Michael Cera for depiction of the discontinued doll Allan.
In addition to the fifteen awards to be voted on by the Screen Actors Guild members over the next month, the living legend Barbra Streisand will be honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievements and humanitarian accomplishments during the ceremony. Though never a recipient of a SAG Award, Streisand has an Academy Award for her role as Fanny Brice in the iconic musical “Funny Girl. ”
For the first time in the award show’s history, the SAG Awards will be streamed live on Netflix on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from Los Angeles. Having the show so widely accessible will hopefully boost viewership for the ceremony, which isn’t typically broadcast on a major network like the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. In fact, with more people having a Netflix subscription than cable, the Screen Actors Guild might just give the Academy and the HFPA a run for their ratings money.
