Let’s face it: social distancing is not fun. There is only so much time we can spend on social media. Seeing new movies is out of the question for most places as well. Waiting a week for the next episode of your favorite show is already hard enough, but now being at home thinking about it makes it that much harder. Thankfully, streaming television exists! There seems to be an endless amount of TV shows to choose from. However, having that many options can be overwhelming. I don’t know about you, but I tend to get stuck watching the same show a thousand times versus finding something else to watch. So, here are nine wonderful, streaming TV shows to binge watch during quarantine/social distancing. Some are family friendly, while others are not.
The Office
Most of us have watched The Office a thousand times through, but it never gets old. If you have been putting off watching, then now is the time to get with the times! It’s a mockumentary style show that dives into the lives of regular office employees of a paper company called Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, PA. It’s funny, charming, feel-good, and totally relatable. For those of you who are avid watchers, maybe turn it into a drinking (responsibly!) game, BINGO, or turn off the sound and see if you can say the lines from memory.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an animated series of Star Wars that is set in between Episodes II and III. It follows the Republic’s clone army as they struggle with Count Dooku and his Separatist army. Disney+ is releasing new episodes for the new season every Friday, but there are 6 other fantastic seasons already there for you to binge. They’re short, fun, exciting episodes that are appropriate for all ages.
Good Omens
Amazon Prime’s Good Omens is not a show for the whole family, but it is definitely worth binge watching. David Tennant and Michael Sheen play a demon named Crowley and an angel named Aziraphale, respectively. The Apocalypse is coming. Heaven and Hell are ready, except for these two. Crowley and Aziraphale do their best to work together to stop it from happening. The acting is incredible, the stories of each episode are well written, and it is a overall fun way to watch as two unlikely allies attempt to stop the world from ending.
Schitt’s Creek
Another show that isn’t necessarily suitable for young children, Schitt’s Creek is an absolutely hilarious, heartwarming, and well-done comedy series. Johnny Rose (played by Eugene Levy) and his family were once filthy rich, and now they are suddenly completely broke. Their only option is to take the clothes on their backs (and a couple trunks full..) to a run-down, small town called Schitt’s Creek. This is their only remaining asset, and Johnny bought the town a long time ago as a joke for their son. It is really hard to only watch one episode of this show at a time. Watching the characters mourn their previous lives as they have to get used to small-town life is charming and quite funny.
She Ra and the Princesses of Power
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a Netflix remake of the 1980’s cartoon. Adora is a teenager who has been raised by and trained by the evil Horde army. Adora gets lost in the woods one day and stumbles upon a magical sword. This sword turns her into She-Ra, the princess of power. When this happens, Adora’s eyes are opened to the damage and havoc the Horde has been inflicting upon their planet. She then chooses to leave the Horde and join forces with the princesses and the Rebellion. The Rebellion are fighting to protect and take back their home! She-Ra is a show for the whole family and is worth watching over and over. It’s a wonderful show about friendship, forgiveness, sharing how you feel, and teamwork.
New Girl
Another comedy, New Girl will make you laugh, cry, and generally feel all of the feels. Jess (played by Zooey Deschanel) catches her boyfriend cheating, so she has to move out of their apartment. The only available listing she can afford is a loft with 3 other roommates; single, male roommates. Jess and her roommates and her best friend CeCe navigate careers, relationships, and life in general together. This is another show where it is impossible to only watch one episode at a time. Live vicariously through the characters as they go out to their jobs, on dates…while we are practicing social distancing.
The Witcher
The Witcher is a Netflix original that is most definitely not suitable for children. Based off of a series of books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, it follows Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill in the Netflix adaptation) who is a monster hunter. It takes place in a medieval-inspired era, and the timeline can be a little bit messy. Everything gets explained, but it is a show you need to pay close attention while you’re watching. It follows 3 characters in 3 timelines that eventually come together. It’s full of magic, adventure, blood, monsters, and drama. The show itself is filmed beautifully. These episodes are about an hour each, so binging might take more time. Hey, don’t we need something to fill our time anyway?
The Mandalorian
A Disney+ original, The Mandalorian is a Star Wars spin-off that takes place five years after the fall of the Empire in Episode VI. A bounty hunter who goes by “Mando” (played by Pedro Pascal) is looking for a big job. He takes a mysterious call to go out and retrieve something super secret. After he finds this bounty, which happens to be a baby creature (we all have come to call “Baby Yoda”), he isn’t so sure about taking it back to the client. The Mandalorian is faced with difficult decisions, meets new friends and old enemies along the way, and is set on protecting this child. Personally, I would say that this show is kid-friendly. However, there is gun violence like there is in the Star Wars movies, so that would be up to parent discretion.
That 70’s Show
Like the title suggests, That 70’s Show is set in 1976 and focuses on a group of late-high school friends. They live in Wisconsin and are trying to find their way in the teenage, young adult world. Each character in this group of friends is very different, but they all compliment each other so well. Being a sitcom, it is very easy to binge watch. There are eight seasons, so there is plenty of show to watch! Currently, it can be streamed on Netflix.
Hopefully, finding new shows to watch helps fill some empty time during quarantine, self-quarantine, and social distancing. What show or shows are you watching right now?
