Interview: Uneasy Alliances in Criminal Record Season 2

The second season of Apple TV’s acclaimed crime thriller, Criminal Record, premieres Wednesday, April 22. The eight-episode season debuts with a single episode, followed by weekly releases through June 10. Created by BAFTA nominee Paul Rutman, this character-driven drama navigates the complexities of policing a modern London where the truth is often elusive.

In the new season, the stabbing of a young man at a political rally forces rival officers DS June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) and DCI Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) into an uneasy alliance. What begins as a murder investigation quickly escalates into a high-stakes undercover operation to dismantle a far-right bomb plot.

The Power Dynamic Between Daniel Hegarty and June Lenker

The first season fostered a sense of mutual respect between the two leads. However, despite a deeper understanding of one another, their relationship in this second season is still defined by a lack of trust and mutual dislike. Ultimately, the presence of a greater threat forces these two into a necessary, if reluctant, alliance.

In a recent Interview with Temple of Geek, Capaldi explains that Hegarty now recognizes Lenker’s prowess as a great cop, but he remains wary of her directing those skills toward him. On the other side, Cush Jumbo describes the frustration of dealing with Hegarty’s multifaceted defenses. While Lenker has seen through chinks in the armor, she discovers that Hegarty is wearing four suits of armor, making it nearly impossible to truly reach him. This season, Lenker must decide if she will spend her energy trying to peel back those layers or focus on getting something good done.

What to expect in Season 2 of Criminal Record

While Criminal Record may not offer traditional escapism, its ability to mirror real-world events gives it a frighteningly authentic edge. The realism of these real-world horrors can be unsettling for those already anxious about the state of society, yet the storytelling remains remarkably inspirational.

There is a profound sense of hope found in the competence of Lenker and Hegarty. Watching two masters of their craft pursue the truth and protect their city provides a deeply satisfying sense of justice. This makes Season 2 essential viewing for fans of high-stakes drama. The second season is every bit as intense and powerful as its predecessor. The storylines resonate deeply within today’s volatile political climate. And the series continues to deliver incredible performances, razor-sharp writing, and breathtaking cinematography.
