“The Julia Set” Premieres at TIFF 2026

Directed by Niki Byrne in her feature directorial debut, the film follows Julia (Chase Infiniti), a gifted university student to whom mathematics has always come naturally. Growing up, Julia learned to downplay her abilities to draw attention away from her high-needs sibling and avoid disrupting the expectations of others.

Her life shifts when teaching assistant Pascal (Christopher Briney, The Summer I Turned Pretty) recognizes her talent and recruits her into an elite group of student prodigies. Together, they train for the Putnam Exam, the most challenging undergraduate math competition in North America.

Training under an infamously tough professor (Nina Hoss), Julia faces intense pressure. Pascal’s father, played by Jason Isaacs, is a giant in the field of mathematics who passes the baton through intimidation. As the competition nears, tensions cause Pascal to spiral while a grounded Julia rises to the occasion.
