New York Comic Con became the epicenter for webtoon and anime enthusiasts during the Crunchyroll Showcase, where a massive partnership was unveiled alongside jaw-dropping first looks at upcoming adaptations. Industry powerhouses Hayate, Line Digital Frontier Corporation, and Crunchyroll officially announced a major co-production partnership. The collaboration will bridge the gap between digital-native comics and world-class animation, targeting a robust slate of around 15 select Webtoon series titles to be developed and produced from the ground up.

The co-production announcement served as the launchpad for major updates on three flagship Hayate-produced adaptations based on popular webcomics from Line Digital Frontier’s platforms. The Remarried Empress was officially announced for an anime adaptation, with the panel thrilling fans by dropping stunning character art alongside a special promotional trailer that unveiled the core production staff and main cast. Teenage Mercenary brought high-octane action to center stage as producers revealed a striking new teaser visual accompanied by an action-packed special promo trailer. Meanwhile, The Boxer also officially received its grand anime adaptation announcement, highlighted by the debut of a special promo trailer that set the tone for its emotional animated transition.

Under the newly forged multi-company framework, the three entities are pooling their respective industry strengths. Hayate will steer development and production, Line Digital Frontier supplies its massive pipeline of hit webcomics from services like Line Manga, and Crunchyroll will exclusively stream the resulting series across select territories worldwide.

Executive leadership emphasized the global scale and vision behind the initiative. Leo Watanabe, President and CEO of Hayate, noted that they see a tremendous opportunity to transform globally loved digital-native stories into world-class anime franchises, remaining committed through close collaboration with Line Digital Frontier and Crunchyroll to create adaptations that faithfully capture the spirit of the original works. Hiroshi Mori, Representative Director of Line Digital Frontier, expressed delight that the partnership will allow them to bring their Webtoon series to fans in Japan and across the globe in an exciting new form. Asa Suehira, Chief Content Officer of Crunchyroll, added that working alongside Hayate and Line Digital Frontier creates an exciting opportunity to introduce these titles and their unique worlds to new audiences through the power of anime.

This massive webtoon-to-anime pipeline arrives against the backdrop of unprecedented global growth for the industry. According to data from The Association of Japanese Animations, the anime market reached a record-high $25.36 billion in 2024, representing a 14.8% year-over-year increase. International markets served as the primary growth engine, surging 26.0% to $14.33 billion and outpacing Japan’s domestic market at $11.03 billion. With consumer research indicating that 44% of entertainment consumers aged 13 to 54 and 54% of Generation Z identify as anime fans, this NYCC showcase marks a pivotal step in turning globally beloved digital comics into mainstream multimedia empires.
