‘The Good Place’ Recap: The Brainy Bunch Season 3 Episode 3

Viewers reeling from the season 3 premiere surprise twist get their first look at Trevor, the Bad Place Demon, doing his best to try to separate the group. On last night’s episode of ‘The Good Place’, Micheal and Janet are the balance to this as they consistently disobey the Judge’s orders and sneak down to Earth to try to undue the damage that Trevor has made. On Earth the three have no powers and must rely on manipulation and tactic to win.

Trevor knows that separating Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani and Jason is the key to making sure that they end up in The Bad Place after they die. Adam Scott nails it as the very annoying and overly eager newest member of Chidi’s study. He dubs their study team “The Brainy Bunch” and annoys Eleanor to the point that she wants to give up on the entire project. Micheal and Janet pop up throughout the episode attempting to block each move Trevor makes.

The interesting thing to note about all of this, is that even though the three of them are meddling in the lives of theses four humans, it is the humans who are actually keeping their own team together. When Trevor attempts to get to Tahani and Jason to sleep together and cause Tahani to run away in embarrassment, it doesn’t work. Jason’s chivalrous behavior towards Tahani and his genuine interest in getting to know her is touching to Tahani. Who probably has never had any genuinely care about her or look at her the way Jason does. She definitely seemed to find him endearing.

Eleanor although very turned off to the idea of spending time with Jason or Trevor, is willing to endure a lot to be around Chidi. She is even able to communicate her desire for a friendship with Chidi without acting out negatively. When she can no longer take the idea of not being friends with Chidi and stays in her hotel room instead of going to class, it is Simone who nudges Chidi into going after Eleanor. And as always, Eleanor can not say no to Chidi. This poses questions about Simone. What is her role in all of this? She has been a refreshingly fun new addition to the cast. Her smile and her enthusiasm are very comforting. She almost serves as a muse to help Chidi work out his thoughts. Could she be some guardian angel?

The episode leaves us with the three meddlers, Trevor, Janet and Micheal being caught by the judge and banned from returning to Earth.

Next week’s episode “The Snowplow” will air on NBC October 11, 2018 8:30 PM.
