Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor – Doctor Who  Season 12: James Pardon/BBC Studios/BBC America

Doctor Who is available to stream exclusively on HBO Max, but future season/specials will still premiere on BBC AMERICA.

Jodie Whittaker currently stars on the show as the main character known as the Doctor. While David Tennant and Matt Smith were both previously on Doctor Who as earlier incarnations of the Doctor.

The Virtual Panel

This virtual panel is a delightful chat among the guest about the biggest thing they have in common, playing the Doctor. They share their memories and their feelings on what it was like to portray such an iconic character. One of the most endearing traits that these three Doctors share is their commitment and love for the role of the Doctor. It’s visible in their discussion that they try to never let fans down. They discuss their sense of ownership over the role of the Doctor and some of the experiences they’ve encountered their fans.

David Tennant as the Doctor

It’s a huge privilege and it also feels very precious. Because people love it so much and it means so much to people all through their lives. And to be the custodian of that for a while, you just don’t want to break it. – David Tennant

Another enduring thing about the trio is their camaraderie with one another. You see that immediately in a sweet moment at the beginning of the panel when Jodie laments that they are not able to promote the show with high fives and hugs to one another and instead must meet up virtually. Yet despite that, she jokes that it is still a pleasure to speak to people who are not the people she lives with. I think we can agree that social distancing makes a lot of us feel that way. David Tennant and Matt Smith also agree with Jodie in that they would have loved to have been together in person for this. Although Matt admits that for him it also has to do with the fact that technology unnerves him.

HBO Max Brings on Doctor Who

Matt Smith as the Doctor

Doctor Who has been around for almost 60 years. Its reach is worldwide and generations of Whovians (Doctor Who Fans) have grown up with the show.  It really feels like streaming services like HBO Max, Netflix, and Disney Plus are working hard to get all of us geeks and nerds over to their platforms. Disney Plus launched in November and has collected many fandoms under its flag. Currently, on Disney Plus, you can find such fandoms as Star Wars, Marvel, Disney (obviously), and now Fox favorites like the X-Men. But HBO Max came to play and they are housing an impressive collection of DC universe programming. Not to mention their own brand of shows like Game of Thrones, West World, and Watchmen. Adding Doctor Who is just another impressive reason for nerds to subscribe to their streaming service.

Doctor Who will return this holiday season to BBC America with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor in ‘Revolution of the Daleks’.
