Suicide Squad costume ideas: Harley Quinn

We’ve put together a list of Harley Quinn costume ideas for Halloween! “The Suicide Squad” dropped in theaters and on HBO Max this summer and is right on time for the Halloween fun.

My tip for getting a good quality cosplay is to look up the reviews for the items you are purchasing or look up the company’s Instagram page and take a look at their tagged photos. Many times people will tag the company in photos of their costume. Also, check out this gag reel below because there are some great close-up shots of her costume.

Harley Quinn – Battle Ready Costume

Harley Quinn is seen in two outfits in the film. No longer lovesick, Quinn is battle-ready, and her first look reflects that. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky put Robbie in fitted pants, a bustier vest, and a bolero-style leather jacket emblazoned on the back with a motto devised by James Gunn that says “Live Fast, Die Clown.” Each piece of the look was custom-dyed and a mix of waxed denim and leather. Her look has a lot of nods to the comic books. Even has her goggles are a nod to the comics. Makovsky states that  James Gunn told him “I want to do the Harley from the comic, I want what the fans want, the red and black—I even want the hair red and black. And I don’t want the shorts anymore because she’s going into battle.” So they went with her battle look, which is more serious and inspired by comics.

MARGOT ROBBIE as Harley Quinn

There are several online retailers that carry different versions of this outfit. You can even find this outfit at places like Spirit of Halloween. If you want a higher quality costume stick to cosplay websites or retailers like Hot Topic and Her Universe. Places like Party City or Rubie’s costumes tend to offer a lower-quality product that is meant for Halloween and not necessarily for longer wear.

Harley Quinn – Ball Gown Costume

Her second outfit is a sparkly red evening gown that eventually gets torn to shreds throughout Harley’s many action scenes in the film. Makovsky created an exquisite piece she dubbed “a cross between haute couture and a quinceañera gown.” Taking months to make the 15 dresses needed to cover its various stages of distress, the design included asymmetrical pleated netting, sequins, and Swarovski crystals, with ruffles to give it a South American flare.

Versions of this dress and Harley’s battle outfit can be found at various cosplay sites and major retailers.

Harley Quinn – Wig and Costume Accessories

A few things that help make your costume look more authentic are the accessories. A good wig is hard to find.  My tip for getting a good quality cosplay wig is to look up the reviews for the items you are purchasing or look up the company’s Instagram page and take a look at their tagged photos. Harley also has a large variety of tattoos on her arms, neck, face, and back.
