The world has never been the same after the death of legendary musician and American Treasure, Prince. Known for his musical prowess and his mixing of sexual themes with spirituality within his lyrics, Prince has always been a complex individual who defined himself by his music and his performances and the world very figuratively stopped when the announcement of his death hit the news in spring of 2016. NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, just released a documentary regarding Prince titled Prince: The Final Secret.
Prince: The Final Secret
Let’s just stop a moment and just reflect on how terrible of a title Prince: The Final Secret truly is. A title like that can lead to several negative implications. Horrible title aside, this very short documentary is actually very well made. Featuring interviews from former members of various versions of Prince’s bands, business partners, and friends, it gives a very new look at the extremely private life of Prince. It shows the legacy of a man who was truly humble and gave back to his community and his people in a way that very few actually knew.
Prince was a very funny guy, bandmembers would say, as Prince played practical jokes on those close to him. He wanted to see the best versions of those close to him and pushed people to be the best versions of themselves. Coming from a less than ideal household, Prince ended up living with his best friend whose mother showed Prince the importance of an education and how it was important to keep learning new things.
The titular secret that Prince kept from the public was how generous he was as a human being. Not the type of generosity we see with modern celebrities where there is always a camera involved. Prince oftentimes donated large sums of money to charities and foundations anonymously. Prince truly felt that the best way to give was to give without expecting recognition. The amount of charities he donated to throughout his lifetime is absolutely heartwarming to a level that has actually affected this writer directly.
So after you watch this documentary, because you absolutely should, think about this being the season of giving and do your best to be kind, loving, and generous. Give without the expectation of something in return and show love to your fellow human. We could all stand to follow the example that Prince has shown us.
