Star Trek: Lower Decks will come to an end with Season 5 this upcoming fall of 2024. This news comes at a very peculiar time with Star Trek: Discovery currently showing on the streaming service and playing into its 5th and final season. The announcement was made via the Star Trek and Star Trek on Paramount Plus official social media channels.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Ends with Season 5 this Fall
The 5th season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will be its last. Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunner/creator Mike McMahan provided their statement on the official Star Trek social media channels:
To the fans,
We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.
Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting ‘LOWER DECKS!’ We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures.
Lower Decks became a success with fans when it debuted in August of 2020 with much needed comic relief in the middle of a pandemic. Star Trek: Lower Decks focused on much of the quirky lives, adventures, and relationships of the support crew of the “lower decks” of the Starfleet ship, the U.S.S. Cerritos. While Season 5 may be its end, the statement provided by McMahan and Kurtzman provides some hope saying that, “We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures.” In the words of the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, #CerritosStrong.”
In a statement by Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President of Programming on Paramount+, he reiterated:
“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the STAR TREK universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers. STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor, and we’re elated to announce another season ahead of our season three premiere. Similarly, STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”
Despite the end of Lower Decks and the rebirth of another series continuing to expand and “boldly go,” so to speak, with Strange New Worlds, there is no doubt that both of these series have contributed to an ever expanding Star Trek universe. There are many more stories to tell and with fans remaining hopeful, they continue to see the beloved characters in other future iterations of Trek.
