Ashley Eckstein’s impact on the fandom is immense, and this show is her gift to fans – a unique way to engage with the community. Unlike any other SDCC event, it offers opportunities for audience participation, from walking the catwalk during intermission to voting for the audience winner. The Her Universe Fashion Show is truly a one-of-a-kind spectacle.

The dynamic hosting duo, Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka in Star Wars and founder of Her Universe) and returning co-host Michael James Scott (Broadway star of Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, and Something Rotten) will undoubtedly captivate the audience. Last year, Eckstein stunned with a couture design merging technology and fashion, featuring flexible OLED screens displaying Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars content. Eckstein’s vision for the Her Universe Fashion Show was to create a platform for aspiring designers to showcase their passion for pop culture-inspired fashion. Ten years later, the show has become a cornerstone event at San Diego Comic-Con, exceeding all expectations. The show has evolved into a significant event, fostering a community of designers and fans who share a passion for geek fashion.

“It has wildly exceeded my expectations,” Eckstein shares. “I never expected the show to become what it is today. It’s taken on a life of its own.”

Building a Community of Creatives

One of Eckstein’s proudest achievements is the vibrant community that has blossomed around the fashion show. Designers support and uplift each other, forming lasting friendships and professional connections. The show has created a space where designers can connect, collaborate, and inspire one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie within the geek fashion community.

“The community is very supportive,” Eckstein emphasizes. “What you see is designers supporting each other, helping each other, lifting each other up, and then creating lifelong bonds and lifelong friendships.”

Changing Lives Through Fashion

The Her Universe Fashion Show has not only provided a platform for designers but has also opened doors to new opportunities. Some designers have launched careers, while others have found their true calling in the fashion industry. The show has served as a launching pad for many talented individuals, giving them the exposure and recognition they need to pursue their dreams in the fashion world.

“The show has actually changed the lives of so many of our designers,” Eckstein reveals. “Some designers have gotten jobs because of the show. They’ve changed careers because of the show. They’ve received so many opportunities because of the show.”

Mattel: A Nostalgic Partnership

This year’s fashion show is presented by Mattel, a brand close to Eckstein’s heart. Growing up, Barbie and Polly Pocket played a significant role in her life, and this partnership is a celebration of shared milestones. The collaboration with Mattel brings a sense of nostalgia and excitement to the show, as it taps into the childhood memories and passions of many fans. Eckstein fondly remembers playing with Polly Pocket and embracing the nickname given to her due to her small stature. She connected with the character’s independent spirit and ability to create her own world.

“Barbie has played an integral part in my childhood, in my upbringing,” Eckstein reminisces. “I was Barbie obsessed.” Mattel is also celebrating some big milestones: the 65th anniversary of Barbie, the 35th anniversary of Polly Pocket, and next year will be Mattel’s 80th anniversary.
