[Interview] Mauricio Ortiz-Segura, Voice of Giulio Gandini in ‘My Hero Academia: You’re Next’

The cast of the highly anticipated movie, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, celebrated together during the North American premiere in Hollywood. We spoke with Mauricio Ortiz-Segura, the English dub voice of Giulio Gandini in My Hero Academia: You’re Next.

Mauricio Ortiz-Segura is Thrilled to Play an Important Role in My Hero Academia: You’re Next

My Hero Academia: You’re Next is coming to North American theaters on October 11, 2024. The film follows the students of Hero Course Class 1-A of UA High School as they battle an imposter of a hero they adore, All Might. Early on, the students meet a mysterious red-head with an eye patch who seems to be getting in their way. However, Giulio Gandini has his own reasons for interfering with Deku and his friends’ plans.

Mauricio Ortiz-Segura explains how he felt when he was cast in the film:

I know how important a role in My Hero Academia comes. You know? Especially a role like this one, that’s very similar to Rody Soul in the last movie…I mean, everybody loved that character. And so, when you get the chance to play a character, even close to similar to, not in terms of character but in terms of importance to the story, it’s a level of pressure that gets added on to a role that I don’t typically get.

He goes on to say that it can be nerve-racking to think about bringing an important character like Giulio to life. However, when he went in to record his lines, those nerves went away. Mauricio thanks his director for that:

Once you get in there and start recording for him, the nerves kind of go away. And that’s a big thanks to my director, Mike McFarland…That man knows exactly what he wants, and he will get you to what he wants. And so, he made the process so much easier, especially since it was my first time working with him.

Furthermore, we ask what he was the most excited for audiences to see. He praises the animation, from the smallest details to the big fight scenes. “If you’re a big animation buff like I am, go watch this movie!”

About My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is an anime and manga series created by Kohei Horikoshi. In this world, most people have “quirks,” or special powers. However, Izuku Midoriya (also known as Deku), the main character of the series, is born without a quirk. Japan’s Number 1 Hero, All Might, bestows his own quick upon Midoriya, which allows him to join a class of heroes-in-training at UA High School. The students of UA High School are training to be the next generation of heroes.

The manga recently finished as of this year, after ten years of publication in Shonen Jump. There are seven seasons of the anime and three films, with My Hero Academia: You’re Next being the fourth. Watch each season, streaming on Crunchyroll.
