Exoborne Impressions: The New Extraction Shows Promise, But is Fighting an Uphill Battle

Exoborne, developed and published by Sharkmob AB, is an open-world tactical extraction shooter set in a chaotic world ravaged by extreme weather forces. With a focus on dynamic environments, strategic gameplay, and cooperative elements, Exoborne introduces fresh ideas to the shooter genre. After spending some time with a playtest of the game, there is much to sink your teeth into and elements to reflect on.

Dynamic Weather Adds Depth to Gameplay

One of Exoborne’s standout features is its ever-changing weather system. This dynamic mechanic significantly impacts combat and strategy, forcing players to adapt on the fly. Powerful storms, shifting winds, and environmental hazards create constant tension, ensuring no two encounters feel the same. Numerous times in my time with the game I found the weather was something you quickly are cognizant of with any decisions you take. I really enjoyed the twist(ers) and turns it took me on as I navigated across the maps searching for resources.

Intense Combat and Cooperative Gameplay

Players can customize powerful exo-rigs to enhance their combat potential. These rigs provide unique abilities, boosting mobility, defense, and offensive tactics. With the right loadout, players can manipulate the chaotic weather to their advantage, turning environmental threats into strategic opportunities.

Exoborne thrives on its kinetic third-person combat. The action encourages constant movement, making combat feel fast-paced and engaging. Players must adapt as they traverse wreckages, ruined cities, and volatile landscapes. The game supports cooperative play with three-player squads, rewarding teamwork and coordination during intense firefights.

Where Does Exoborne Fit in the Live Service Market?

Despite Exoborne’s strengths, it faces an uphill battle in an industry saturated with live-service shooters. With games like Fortnite, Destiny 2, and Escape from Tarkov dominating the space, Exoborne must carve out its niche to stay relevant. While its dynamic weather mechanic sets it apart, further innovation and content depth will be key to its long-term success. Games like Exoborne live and die by their active player bases and with several studios already closing or rethinking their live-service efforts, it begs the question, where does Exoborne fit in this market such that it can thrive?

Potential for Growth and Improvement

Sharkmob AB has laid a solid foundation, but Exoborne’s success will depend on how well the developers expand on its unique features. Leaning harder into the dynamic weather system could give Exoborne a stronger identity. Incorporating more environmental hazards, weather-specific gear, and strategic map design could elevate the game further.

A Strong Start with Room to Grow

Exoborne shows promise as a tactical shooter that blends environmental storytelling with dynamic combat. Its engaging weather mechanics and satisfying gunplay create memorable moments, but Sharkmob AB must continue refining its identity to thrive in the crowded live-service space. With continued updates and meaningful content expansions, Exoborne has the potential to become a standout experience for shooter fans and I look forward to seeing their development continue as they approach a launch date sometime later in 2025.
