A superhero tale that draws from Nigerian culture, music, and mythology
Cartoon Network, Max, and Lion Forge Entertainment unveiled the first feature trailer for their highly anticipated animated series “Iyanu” at New York Comic Con last year. The preview offered fans a vibrant introduction to the series’ story, which draws heavily from Nigerian culture and mythology. Adapted from the popular graphic novel “Iyanu: Child of Wonder” by Roye Okupe (published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics), the series is scheduled to Cartoon Network Saturday, April 5 @ 9:30 AM ET/PT, and the following day on Max. It will also stream exclusively on Showmax across 44 African countries.

Set in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland, the series follows Iyanu, a teenage orphan who studies history and ancient arts. When danger arises, she unknowingly triggers divine powers. Teaming up with friends Biyi and Toye, Iyanu embarks on a journey to discover the truth about the evil threatening her homeland and uncover secrets about her past and destiny.
The series features a talented Nigerian voice cast led by Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Okey Jude as Biyi, and Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye. The cast also includes Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Stella Damasus, Shaffy Bello, and Ike Ononye. Lion Forge Entertainment, a leading Black-owned animation studio, is co-producing the series, bringing its commitment to amplifying authentic, diverse voices to the project.
Iyanu premieres April 5 at 9:30am ET/PT, and will stream on MAX April 6.
