Sway Bhatia Discusses Her Journey and More

After their summer road trip takes an unexpected detour, Seabrook’s zombie/cheerleader-alien sweethearts Zed and Addison inadvertently become camp counselors to two opposing monster factions — Daywalkers and Vampires. As tensions flare between the rival groups, the Seabrook crew must convince Nova, a Daywalker, and Victor, a Vampire, to try to unite their warring worlds to prevent a greater threat that endangers them all.

Why do you believe the ZOMBIES franchise has become so beloved, and what does it mean to you to be a part of it?

As a longtime fan, I truly believe one of the most powerful and beloved aspects of the ZOMBIES franchise is its core message about unity, acceptance, and the beauty of bringing together people or “monsters” from all different backgrounds. I grew up watching the ZOMBIES movies, dancing, singing along, and getting completely swept up in the world. So now, to be on the other side of the screen is incredibly surreal. Knowing that there might be a young girl, maybe even a young girl of color, watching this new film, connecting with my character, and reciting my lines… it’s a full-circle moment that’s deeply humbling and incredibly meaningful. It reminds me just how important representation and storytelling are.

Dawn of the Vampires will deliver nine new songs for fans. Which one are you most excited to share with the world and why?

It’s honestly so hard to choose just one. Every song is so thoughtfully crafted and brings something new to the table. They all have that classic DCOM energy with songs that are catchy, bold, and fun, yet they still manage to bring new energy in a really exciting way. If I had to pick, one of my absolute favorites is “Don’t Mess With Us.” From the moment we started rehearsals, I knew it would be a standout. The choreography hits so hard, the rap section is full of swagger and personality, and how it’s shot, especially the tension between the daywalkers and vampires, feels cinematic and intense. I remember running through it for the first time and thinking, “This is going to be iconic.”

Another moment that really sticks with me is “Show the World.” It’s the finale, and it just gives you chills. It’s the kind of song that lifts you up, makes you want to cry and dance at the same time. Performing it felt like being part of something bigger than just a movie, like it was a celebration of everything the ZOMBIES franchise stands for. Getting to be part of that message, especially knowing young kids are watching and feeling seen, was incredibly powerful.

What was the first thing that stood out to you about Vera when you were reading the script?

What I immediately loved about Vera is how she stays true to herself no matter what. She is unapologetically proud to be a vampire who thrives in the nightlife and embraces that with confidence and a fearless attitude. I remember filming a scene where she had to defend her judgment because she felt responsible for making sure her vampire family would be okay. That moment really stood out to me. It reminded me of times in my own life when I had to stand up and be proud of who I am, even when it felt scary.

What makes the film so special is that every character goes through their own journey, facing challenges that feel very real, like trying to fit in, standing out, or finding where you belong. I hope viewers can see a bit of themselves in Vera’s confidence, compassion, loyalty, or even her playful sass, and feel inspired to bring those qualities into their own lives. Maybe it is about finding your own version of nightlife where you can truly be yourself.

What aspect of the Vampire lifestyle was the most fun to lean into?

Honestly, Vamping out. It was unlike anything I’ve ever done on screen before. Paul Hoen, our director, was really focused on making sure the “Vera vamp-out” moment landed perfectly. Once it clicked, it just stuck. That moment became a part of me. I felt like I was at maximum sass when I vamped-out. It gave off serious “Don’t mess with me” vibes.

Going back to the music. Is there a line from one of the new songs that you found yourself resonating with on a deeper level?

I can’t give too much away from the finale, but every lyric in “Show the World” hits. The chorus alone is so moving:

Show the world it’s who you are and what you give that makes a mark.
Show the world what you believe and leave a footprint on our hearts….
Use your voice and take a chance and make a change…”

Those words aren’t just lyrics — they’re a reminder to lead with authenticity, heart, and courage in life.

What lesson or message did you take away from bringing Vera to life?

Honestly, playing Vera reminded me how tricky it can be to stay true to yourself when everything around you is shifting. She’s dealing with all this drama — new alliances, tough choices, and moments where she has to step way out of her comfort zone. But what I love is that she doesn’t fake it or lose herself. She’s bold, confident, and yeah, a little sarcastic, which made her super fun to play.

For me, as a young woman of color in this business, there have definitely been times when I felt like I had to tone things down or change to fit in. Vera reminded me that it’s okay to grow and change, but still hold onto what makes you, you. True loyalty doesn’t demand sacrificing your integrity or vision. You can support your people while courageously choosing the path that feels authentic, even if it’s the harder one.

At the end of the day, Vera’s journey is a reminder that being yourself is your greatest strength.

Are there any monsters from other TV or film projects that you would like to see Vera interact with in a crossover?

I think it would be amazing to see Vera cross paths with Alex Russo (Selena Gomez). Both are fierce and clever in their own ways, even if one deals in magic and the other in monsters. They would probably push each other to new levels while sharing some hilarious shade and maybe even a few tricks of the trade.
