An unopened TokyoTreat box

TokyoTreat – Summer Matsuri Snackfest Box Review

TokyoTreat’s Summer Matsuri Snackfest box celebrates the joys of summer in Japan with an assortment of intriguing summer-themed snacks. Whether you’re looking to eat all of them yourself or share with your friends and family, there is a lot of yummy stuff here to enjoy — so let’s dive in and see what it’s all about.

Summer Refreshments Done Right

As always, the box includes a booklet sharing details about the snacks you’re about to eat so that you don’t open bags too blindly. But this one also offers some neat information about Japanese summer festivals to go along with the box’s mid-year theme. It’s all good fun to read about, but as you might expect, the star of the show is the treats themselves.

The Summer Matsuri Snackfest box eased me in with a hint of familiarity by including some chocolate orange KitKats and strawberry cotton candy, preying on my sweet tooth to great effect before leading me down a path of more unique treats. I soon discovered a fairly sizable bag of soy sauce corn puffs to balance things out with a kick of salty goodness. Later, I checked out a delicious eggplant miso soup and chomped on some crunchy edamame bites before digging into even more sugary stuff (shoutout to the fizzy soft drink gummies and shaved ice jellies).

Most of it was so good that I ate more than I should have in a single day — but of course, not everything landed. There was a package of dry sugar donuts that didn’t quite hit the mark, and I didn’t care much for the bag of fried rice crackers with an overpowering flavor of barbequed pork. But as always with any of these subscription boxes, trying even the less enjoyable snacks is all part of the fun. In this case, I liked far more than I disliked, so I’d say the Summer Matsuri Snackfest box was an overall excellent box of goodies.

What to Know About the TokyoTreat Subscription

While the snacks included in TokyoTreat boxes differ from month to month, you can expect everything from sweets like chocolate and gummies to more savory additions like soups, ramen, and crackers. The goal of the boxes is to provide a varied encounter with some of Japan’s popular packaged foods, and in my experience, it’s generally successful.

That being said, if you’re considering trying TokyoTreat for yourself, it’s important to understand that you probably won’t always love every snack in the box. It’s more about getting to try new things you may have otherwise never known existed. You win some and lose some, but it’s all about the experience!

Check out the subscription tiers on the Tokyo treat website. You can always start with a single month to see if it’s right for you, or you can save a bit of money by going all-in with 3, 6, or 12-month plans. If you’re taking it month by month, you can even check the website’s preview of the upcoming month’s box to decide if it appeals to you.

As an added bonus, between now and August 15, 2025, you can score some sweet Kirby merch at no added cost through the Kirby’s Summer Surprise promotion when you sign up for 3+ months of TokyoTreat boxes. If you want a nice ramen bowl with Kirby surfing on a wave, I’d suggest you don’t waste any time. Besides, what better character to aid in stuffing your face than the pink creature who inhales anything in its way?
