A Look Into – ‘Final Fantasy XIV Online Cookbook, Vol. 2’

All warriors need a hearty meal and a refreshing drink before they set off beyond the Last Stand. The Ultimate Final Fantasy XIV Online Cookbook, Volume 2: The Culinarian’s Journey from Shadow to Shore is not just an ordinary cookbook. This cookbook, filled with lore and incredible flavors, is a must-have for any fan of the massive multiplayer online (MMO) game Final Fantasy XIV. Culinarians of any experience, Job, or level are encouraged to bring the iconic in-game foods to life. Recipes are broken down into straightforward directions, accompanied by beautiful photos, to fuel your inspiration.

“There is a tale behind every dish – the intentions of those who produced the ingredients, a culinarian’s considerations for their diners, and the wavering or changing emotions of characters as they partake in the meal. Even without words or dialogue, the power of food can eloquently convey a narrative on its own.” – Yoshida

With over 70 recipes for any occasion, gamers and culinarians can level up their Cooking skills. Categories include breakfast, appetizers, breads, soups & stews, main dishes, sides, desserts, and drinks. Recipes have been compiled from locations within the Final Fantasy XIV expansions Showbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail. There’s something for everyone, regardless of taste palette. This cookbook features the spices Zero adores, including a comforting hot buuz, yummy dairy-free carrot muffins, and a kick with a cocktail.

Making a piece of the culinary landscape within Final Fantasy XIV is within reach, and memories are waiting to be made. Furthermore, with the holidays upon us, this hardcover book is not only a great addition to the kitchen but a great gift for any Final Fantasy fan.

A New Adventure For The Warrior of Light

What better way to embark on your Final Fantasy Culinary side-quest than with a Foreword by Naoki Yoshida, the Producer and Director of Final Fantasy XIV? This introduction provides heartfelt motivation and highlights the impact that good food and culinary intentions can have on characters during their shared meals.

Following Yoshida’s words features a “Meet the Team” section, which introduces adorable characters who appear throughout the book. Gyohan, Mogria, and Tastingway enhance the tone, bringing an effortless sense of community and charm. On each page, the trio gives a brief introduction to the Hydaelyn cuisine and shares stories and lore from their travels. Along with these passages, the book showcases images directly from the game, appearing as though they are fastened with washi tape. This adorable touch creates the vibe of a scrapbook filled with delightful memories.

Location Details at the front breaks down noteworthy places within the Final Fantasy XIV expansions. Sections share what the residents enjoy, the sights, and the experience. Locations include The Northern Empty, Ilsabard, The Sea of Stars, The World Unsundered, and more. Each member of the culinary team shares a bit about their adventures and the journey they took to experience the food.

At the back of the book, a section dedicated to Dietary Considerations details the different vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free diets. For culinarians who need to modify or substitute a recipe, a chart is provided with every recipe in the book, indicating the page number and whether it can be adapted to meet dietary needs. There is a good variety of dairy-free and vegetarian recipes, while none of the bread options offer gluten-free alternatives. However, all of the desserts are vegetarian.

A Look At The Regional Cuisines

Recipes differ in terms of preparation and cooking duration, ranging from quick 5-minute dishes to those that require several hours to finish. Each recipe includes a helpful table detailing the Difficulty, Prep Time, Inactive Time, Cook Time, Yield, and Dietary Notes. The equipment necessary to accomplish the meal is also stated, followed by the instructions.

The “Royal Toast” recipe from Yok Tural opens with a conversation between Gyohan and Mogria. A detailed breakdown of the recipe components follows, setting the stage for cooking!

After obtaining the necessary equipment, the recipe calls for a milk mixture and Royal Toast ingredients. The instructions for creating the Milk Mixture come first, followed by those for the Royal Toast. The steps are straightforward, although the only challenging part may be obtaining cinnamon sticks. Usually, cooks are accustomed to using or already have powdered cinnamon in their kitchen. But with some planning, any of these ingredients can be sourced.

My go-to recipe for quick prep and great taste is the Alligator Salad from The Black Shroud. The only alteration I made was swapping out the blue cheese for feta. However, the combination of red bell pepper, avocado, cheese, and some yummy leaves, topped with balsamic vinegar, is so delicious!

Closing Thoughts

Some of my other favorite recipes from this book include Eurekan Potion, Baba Ghanoush, Sykon Cookie, and Peppered Popotoes.

The Final Fantasy XIV Cookbook, Volume 2, makes for a great gift for any Final Fantasy fan. Culinarians don’t need to be at master level to make something wonderful. Remember, every warrior needs a good meal before a long dungeon crawl. Furthermore, if you’re looking for more cooking options, check out the variety of cookbooks Insight Editions has to offer!
