Aabria Iyengar Reveals Sci-Fi Inspirations For Next Worlds Beyond Number Campaign

“Worlds Beyond Number” has closed out their first major campaign. The first book in “The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One” came to an epic conclusion that sets up exciting possibilities for the future. This is not the end of our time in Umora. Brennan Lee Mulligan will return as GM of this world down the line. He’s even teased potential one-shots in this world in the future. However, he now is stepping away from the GM seat and settling into his time as a player.

“Worlds Beyond Number” has exciting projects on the horizon. The other three cast members will each take a turn leading their own tale. 2025 will close out with a mystery led by Erika Ishii based on the iconic board game Clue called “Hint!” Lou Wilson will take a turn behind the GM screen as well for a short sci-fi adventure. However, the true promise of multiple worlds is coming to fruition in 2026. Aabria Iyengar will helm an all-new epic sci-fi saga. While details are being kept close to the vest, Mulligan is notably excited. He and Iyengar teased the next campaign in an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek.

Brennan Lee Mulligan:

“Caitlin, you have no idea how f-cking sick…The amount of things we’re not allowed to share with you right now and how f-cking amped I am for what is to come. “Solari” is going to be so f-cking sick. Everything I’ve heard has only made me salivate more for this story that’s on the horizon.”

Worlds Beyond Number Takes A Page Out Of Dune, Star Wars, & Fifth Element

DUNE

“Solari” is a working title for the upcoming campaign. Not much is known, but Iyengar is stepping away from fantasy into the world of sci-fi. While magic could potentially still come into play, this is an intriguing shift. In Temple of Geek’s interview, Iyengar did share a few of her favorite sci-fi stories that are influences for the campaign.

Aabria Iyengar:

“My favorite single sci-fi piece of fiction is “Dune,” the first one. They get crazy after that. It’s “Dune,” “Star Wars,” “Three Body Problem,” and, in increasingly weirder ways, “The Fifth Element,” which is actually also another one of my favorites. I just like the idea of a space opera, with that sense of building a fantastical place and then expanding and exploring something that feels so huge and breathtaking.

There’s a whole whiteboard that I’ve still got up, and every time my cat walks by and erases a little bit, I panic and redraw it in. But a bunch of my favorite sci-fi and speculative fiction comps are on there. A bunch of everyone’s. It’s just been a joy to do what we got to do before the beginning of “The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One,” which is talk about what sci-fi tropes we like. What we like and want and would hope to see and avoid and play inside of, in those stories. So, now it’s just going to be a really fun time chefing up some space nonsense for these kids. It’s going to be great.”

“The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One” was a coming-of-age story. Each of the three characters grew and evolved into heroes in their own right. Part of what is so exciting about “Solari” is how the story will differ. As a base, the genre will of course be different. But how the characters and themes stand out will be the truly engaging aspect. Iyengar has shown an impressive ability to explore different genres, themes, and stories as GM across “Dimension 20” and “Critical Role.”

Aabria Iyengar Shares Her Excitement About Leading The Next Worlds Beyond Number Campaign

What will set her time leading a “Worlds Beyond Number” story apart is the table. Iyengar, Wilson, Ishii, and Mulligan have been playing together for years. Their first time playing together was “Dimension 20: Misfits & Magic,” which she led. The trust and visceral understanding each of them has for the other is astounding. It allows each of them to make epic character choices. The friendship they have is the foundation that truly amazing stories build up from.

Aabria Iyengar:

“The job is made just manifold easier and more joyful and less stressful when you’ve got this roster. These are the three best to ever do it. I could walk in and be like, “Hey guys, I checked out my first sci-fi book today, and I did read the back cover, but vibes alone, here we go.” And I know the story would be one of my favorite things that I ever got to be a part of.

So, the pressure isn’t there for how to make something that will…I do unfortunately have the pressure-makes-diamonds thing. The more stressed I am as a reflection of how excited and how much I care about it. But I think it is okay to say this is huge shoes to step into and an incredible story to follow. I am just so excited. No one else in the world I would love to jump into the literal abyss of space with than these three. So, we’re going to have a great time.”

“Worlds Beyond Number” was launched in 2023. This team has brought a truly stunning fantasy story to life. Now, they fulfill the promise of exploring multiple worlds. Iyengar’s confidence in her players is palpable and infectious. Mulligan’s excitement and Iyengar’s science fiction inspirations tease a magnificent next campaign. With mystery and wonder ahead, Iyengar may have some big shoes to fill with her story, but she’s clearly up to the task.
