Adam McArthur Interview at AnimeNYC

This weekend, AnimeNYC took over the Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan for three days of fun and celebration of Japanese pop culture. Held from November 18-20, AnimeNYC is in its fifth year and boasts an impressive roster of entertainment guests, big name exhibitors, and even a food hall where attendees can try authentic Japanese food, from boba to bao. Among the guests in attendance this year was voice actor Adam McArthur.

Interview with Adam McArthur

Adam McArthur is perhaps best known as the voice of Yuji Itadori in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen. Other credits include Chifuyu Matsuno (Tokyo Revengers), Koku Hanabata/Trumpet (My Hero Academia), Ricky/Patrick (Shadows House), and Prince Lee-Char (Star Wars: The Clone Wars).

Yuji Itadori

We had the opportunity to talk to Adam about everything Jujutsu Kaisen related on Friday, November 18.

We asked Adam more about his character of Yuji Itadori on Jujutsu Kaisen, particularly what are some of his favorite traits of Yuji’s. He said:

I think his loyalty to his friends. That’s a quality that I really admire. He’s always down–he’s just down no matter what it is. There’s something that happens in the manga later on and they’re like “yeah, you have to die.” And he’s like “okay, let’s go!” […] He’s a yes man.

With season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen on the horizon, we asked Adam what he looked forward to seeing brought to life in the anime. He said:

All of Shibuya.

I think JJK season 2 has the potential to be the best season 2 of any anime. I know honestly I’m biased, and maybe I haven’t watched as much anime as the people who watch everything (I’ve watched a lot of anime), but I think it has the possibility to be an amazing season 2 just because of how much stuff our characters go through. And I think nothing pulls people into a show more than watching characters they love go through really tough stuff and how they deal with it and come out on top.

Arguably, Yuji is greatly affected, but even in the manga, we still see glimpses of our best boy, happy boy early on, which I think is really endearing and makes him even more endearing. So I’m excited to get to Shibuya.
