In a recent interview with Temple of Geek’s Nick Williams, Adrian Lester shared insights into the making of the hit series. From the psychological depth of his character to the stunning visuals and vintage wardrobe.
In the heart of 1977 Moscow, the stakes are life or death in Peacock’s breakout espionage thriller, PONIES. The series follows two unassuming embassy secretaries, Bea (Emilia Clarke) and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson). They are thrust into the dangerous world of CIA operations. Central to this high-stakes game is Adrian Lester, who portrays Dane Walter, the formidable head of the CIA in Moscow.
The Visual Screen Language
The visual authenticity of PONIES relies heavily on a commitment to the tangible, starting with a wardrobe of tactile costumes sourced from genuine vintage materials. Lester noted that moving away from the forgiving stretch of modern spandex and nylon was a literal adjustment. He joked that the stiff, period-accurate denim posed a unique challenge, quipping that if he sat down too quickly, the audience might see more than they bargained for.

This physical groundedness extended to the set’s practical effects, where the production dressed every extra in era-specific attire. For Lester, this immersive environment was more than just a backdrop. It served as a personal time machine, transporting him back to his childhood memories of watching classic cinema.
Beyond the physical sets, Lester geeked out over the show’s old-school cinematography, which employs a distinct visual grammar to heighten the tension. The series utilizes a 4:3 aspect ratio and a specific reverse-shot technique where actors deliver their lines directly into the lens. This stylistic choice forces the audience into the heart of the conversation, ensuring they aren’t just observers. But are instead on the receiving end of the dialogue, moving in lockstep with the characters through the shadows of the 70s.
Layers of Deception Bringing Dane Walter to Life
Lester was initially drawn to the project by the chance to work with Susanna Fogel and David Iserson. Whose clever, layered scripts he found refreshing. He appreciated that the show avoids modern gadgetry in favor of human interaction, memory, and trickery.

Playing the head of the CIA in Moscow required a delicate balance. While Dane Walter often appears cold or emotionless, Lester worked to bring a human element to the role. He noted that by the middle of the season, viewers see that Dane truly cares for his operatives and views their unique success as precious. The character is further humanized by his own internal struggles, including scenes involving a psychiatrist and a near-breakdown.
All eight one-hour episodes of PONIES are streaming exclusively on Peacock. The full season dropped on January 15th at once, so you can watch all episodes now!
