The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) returns to San Diego Comic-Con with an exciting 2019 line-up of panels about the world building artists who worked on Black Panther, Westworld, Captain Marvel, and many more. Audiences can expect to meet these insiders, learn rarely-heard insights, and discover behind the scenes explanations from key art department members like Production Designers, Art Directors, Illustrators, Graphic Designers, and Set Designers.
Additionally, the ADG will present two awards at the 2019 Masquerade, Comic-Con’s annual costume competition. The two winners will each receive a $500 prize for: The Art Directors Guild Cosplay Award for Original Concept Design, presented to an entry with the most originality. The other award, The Art Directors Guild Cosplay Award for Best Graphic Design, is based on superior implementation and craftwork.

They begin with the Production Designer dreaming about the best possible world in which to set a story. There’s research, and plenty of collaboration; with the Director, Cinematographer and an army of art department and visual effects artists, of course. Comic pages, storyboards, and production illustration have developed together since the invention of film, with each influencing the others. What skills do film artists bring to the job that are comparable between the printed page and the moving pictures? The Motion Picture Film Illustrators of the Art Directors Guild will share their experiences working on major films, television, and streaming shows based on comic book, fantasy, and sci-fi adventures. What was once only possible on the printed page can now be brought to life by these talented artists. Panelists include David Lowery (The Lion King, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Matthew Cunningham (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Doom Patrol), Danelle Davenport (Baby Driver, Ant-Man), Aaron Sowd (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), and moderator Tim Burgard (Rampage, Justice League).
