Ava DuVernay’s new film “Origin” is already the best film of 2024.

The new film Origin written and directed by Ava DuVernay will be the best film of 2024. That is a bold statement given that it is only January 7th, but Origin is one of the most heartfelt, emotional, raw, and honest films ever released. DuVernay only creates movies that matter, that have something to say and Origin is no different.

ORIGIN chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson, portrayed by Academy Award-nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, as she works to uncover the roots of a profound societal phenomenon. Driven by personal loss and love she starts on a journey to give answers to why bigotry and racism continue to thrive. The film is adapted by Ava DuVernay from Wilkerson’s acclaimed book “Caste.”

Origin‘s Incredible Casting

The casting in this film is incredible. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is remarkable as Isabel Wilkerson. Ellis-Taylor’s captivating performance makes the audience feel everything that Isabel goes through. Although Jon Bernthal has little screen time his portrayal was such that his impact is felt throughout the entire film. The talents of Victoria Pedretti, Niecy Nash, Audra McDonald, Emily Yancy, and Jasmine Cephas Jones also make this film what it is, amazing.

Ava DuVernay attends a Q&A and screening of her new film ORIGIN at the Museum of Tolerance on Saturday, January 6th in Los Angeles.

Origin gives context to our part and hope for our future

When the film releases on January 19th be prepared to be uncomfortable. Though the film is never overly graphic in its depiction of events, it is real and honest. Some scenes take audiences back to events that depict Nazis, the tragedy of Trayvon Martin, and racism in the deep south. And it is deeply uncomfortable to watch, and it should be.  Through masterful performances, you can believe the people’s fear through the screen and the tension is very tangible.

The film has some incredible quotes but one of the best, which you see in the trailer as well, is “You don’t escape trauma by ignoring it, you escape trauma by confronting it”. The film reminds us to have conversations, bear witness to the tragedies, and do our part so that the past does not repeat. This story is for everyone. Origin gives context to our past and hope for our future. Ava DuVernay is one of the most incredible filmmakers of our time. Seeing her passion and voice on screen is an experience everyone must have. Ava DuVernay’s film “Origin” is an incredible and groundbreaking piece of media. Emotional and impactful “Origin” will leave people in awe.

“Origin” hits theaters on January 19th.
