Warner Bros. Entertainment released a trailer for the upcoming animated film Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham. The film is releasing on digital, Blu-ray, and 4k Ultra HD on March 28, 2023.
Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham is based on a DC Elseworlds comic book series of the same name by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, and Troy Nixey. Elseworld stories are one-off, alternate universe stories like Marvel’s What If. Mike Mignola is famous for creating the Hellboy character and comic series, which also features deep Lovecraftian-style lore.
Batman: The Doom that came to Gotham”
The intriguing and action-packed trailer for the film takes us to a 1920s Gotham. Filled with supernatural Lovecraftian enemies that Bruce Wayne has somehow accidentally released and Batman must face them to protect his city from unimaginable dangers.
Unlike most Batman stories, here, Bruce Wayne has been absent from Gotham for 20 years, and it will be interesting to see how an older Batman handles powerful supernatural forces without his modern gadgets. The film will feature Elseworld versions of beloved DC characters like Oracle, Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr.Freeze, Killer Croc, and Two-Face. Elseworld’s unique versions of known characters are my favorite part of these alternate universe tales because they frequently change what you know about a character and use it to surprise you, sometimes classic characters are villains, and villains are heroes, with Elseworld stories, you never know.
David Giuntoli will voice Batman / Bruce Wayne for the second time. Jason Marsden will join as Dick Grayson, Tati Gabrielle as Kai Li Cain, and Gideon Adlon as Oracle. Veteran directors Sam Liu and Christopher Berkeley will be co-directing Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham.
The film is releasing on digital, Blu-ray, and 4k Ultra HD on March 28, 2023.
If Elseworld tales sound interesting to you, I highly recommend checking out DC’s Batman: Gotham By Gaslight from 2018, and has a Victorian-age Batman investigating Jack The Ripper! As well as Superman: Red Son from 2020. That is an Elseworld story where baby Kal-El lands in Russia instead of the United States of America.
