With incredible new titles released in 2023 and the first half of 2024, DC Comics came to San Diego Comic Con with some big announcements. They had so much big news that their panel had two separate teams to announce everything. Writers and artists from the next major slate at DC Comics talked about their new projects and what they are most excited about.
Right now DC is in the middle of the Absolute Power event. For those of you that don’t know, Absolute Power is a full DCU event where Amanda Waller has drained our favorite heroes of their powers. The creative team loves this story because they must now prove that these characters are heroes without their powers.
Immediately as Absolute Power wraps up, on October 2, DC All In releases its first issue. DC refers to it not as an event, but rather an initiative. We live in a world of media that is saturated with superhero stories, where some people are tired of them and others think that the superhero trend needs to end. Well, the creative teams at DC disagree and they are taking that idea and personifying it. They are using it as a jumping off point to show us why superheroes and comics are so wonderful. To encourage people to go back into comic book stores every week, DC plans to have incentives and giveaways when the book comes out. The aim seems to be to revitalize not just the genre and the medium, but how we interact with it. The most interesting part about this story is that it is going to be a flip-book: it’s essentially two stories in one. One side tells the story from from Superman’s optimistic point of view, but if you flip the book over you can read it from Darkseid’s point of view.
They also announced that Justice League Unlimited is going to come back! We are going back to headquarters, with everyone you love appearing on the team.
DC is definitely coming out with some new and innovative things this year. By the end of the year, we will see a major event and all its fallout, closing out with a major, universe-changing initiative.
