The hosts began with a spoiler-free discussion, catering to listeners who may not have seen the episode or played the game. Olivia, a self-proclaimed purist, admitted her initial reservations about the changes from the game. “So there were quite a few changes from the game in this first episode,” she explained. “And so as it was happening, I was kind of like, no, why are they changing things? What’s going to happen?” However, she acknowledged the strength of the episode and the potential for these changes to enhance the overall narrative. “But as the episode wrapped up and I kind of sat there with my thoughts, I still loved the episode and the changes. I think they’re going to make sense,” Olivia said. Danielle echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of considering the perspective of viewers unfamiliar with the game.

Character Highlights and Gameplay Nods

Danielle and Olivia highlighted their favorite aspects of the episode, with a particular focus on new character Gail, played by Catherine O’Hara. They praised O’Hara’s performance and her dynamic with Pedro Pascal’s Joel, while also noting the intriguing addition of a therapist in a post-apocalyptic setting. “Gail isn’t in the game. So it was a wonderful addition to have her,” Olivia stated. The hosts also expressed their enjoyment of the nods to gameplay elements, such as stealth mode, resource gathering, and workbench mechanics, seamlessly integrated into the show’s narrative. “But my favorite thing, or like my the thing I especially liked in this episode were the nods to the gameplay,” Olivia shared. “I love when they do stuff like that.”

The podcast hosts provided in-depth analyses of key characters and plot developments. They discussed Ellie’s growth and training, Joel’s emotional struggles, and the introduction of Dina. The complexities of Joel’s character were a significant focus, particularly his interactions with Gail and his evolving relationship with Ellie. “I think that it’s worth mentioning what Joel discusses with Gail in his session, which is essentially that he is trying to replace Ellie with Dina,” Danielle pointed out.

Emotional Impact and Easter Eggs

Danielle and Olivia shared their emotional responses to the episode, with several tear-jerking moments noted. They also pointed out Easter eggs and cameos, such as Gustavo Santaolalla, the composer for the game and show, appearing in the dance scene, and the significance of Ellie’s journal and drawings. Regarding the composer’s cameo, Danielle noted, “The person playing the banjo is Gustavo…the composer yes for the game and for the show”.

To set the stage for the following discussion, the hosts provided a concise recap of the episode’s key events, including the Firefly funeral, the introduction of Abby, and the exploration of life in Jackson. “So we saw immediately after Joel and Ellie have their little talk before they enter Jackson back at the end of ah season one,” Danielle summarized. They also shared their excitement and anticipation for the next episode, particularly regarding the looming threats to Jackson. “Honestly, yeah I mean, i as soon as the episode ended, both my mom and I were like, wow, wish there was another,” Olivia exclaimed.

Spoiler-Heavy Game Comparisons

The conversation then shifted into spoiler territory, as Danielle and Olivia delved into the significant changes from the game. They discussed the altered timeline, the impact of Abby’s opening scene, and the implications of these changes for future episodes. “So just as a reminder, or in case anyone’s listening who’s not played the game, the game starts off with Joel and Tommy talking, and Joel is telling Tommy what happened at the Firefly Hospital,” Danielle reminded listeners. The hosts also explored theories about Joel’s death and the potential for the show to deviate from the game’s narrative. “So there’s been theories online that maybe Joel’s death will change in the show, and in the show compared to the game,” Olivia shared.

Eugene’s Role and Speculations

The podcast further examined the character of Eugene and the circumstances surrounding his death, leading to some interesting theories about his involvement in the plot. “Well, we thought he was going to be alive. And turns out Joel killed him, which I was like, why?” Olivia questioned.

Despite their reservations about some of the changes, the hosts expressed their overall excitement for the season and their trust in the showrunners. “And the thing about Craig Mazin is that he loves this game series so much,” Danielle said, expressing confidence in the show’s direction. They concluded the podcast by thanking their listeners and sharing their social media handles. “We want to thank everyone who tuned in today and especially our guests for listening to us yap for the past hour and a bit,” Danielle said in closing.
