WHAT WE ARE PLAYING THIS WEEK
Amanda – It’s more among us for me. We actually had a twitch game last week with a bunch of the other ToG contributors and editors. You can catch that on twitch @templeofgeek – I think the hide and seek mode was my favorite because it was so frantic and I’m into that. Looking forward to doing that again for sure
Stacy – Well I’m on the “Among Us” wagon now too, but I’m really trying to finish out any hanging threads from World of Warcraft so that I don’t miss out when the Xbox arrives. Mounts, loots, golds…my preciousssssssssssss.

MAIN TOPIC – Why do gaming move sets and gaming controls get more complex as titles release sequels?
Today we’re talking about why games have gone from 4D pads and 2 buttons to 360 movement sets and multi-button combos with QTE’s? Is it because the player base is more experienced? Or are devs just trying to make use of the tech available to keep the game fresh. The Rebel’s discuss.
Amanda – I think it’s a mix of taking advantage of the tech available and trying to keep the players engaged with customization, realism, and complexity. I mean, take CoD, for example, there are so many things you can change on your build to have a different playing experience. It’s not just loaded in and shoot anymore. In fact, not customizing can see you at a disadvantage versus other players. Every magazine you choose has different stats, you can have perks and you can customize the look of your character to blend in if you wish. I think players are demanding this level of personalization now. Fighting games too. I used to be decent at them, but they’ve gotten really complex these days. Just having a weak joystick on your controller can really put you at a disadvantage trying to get directional combos off. My recent experience with MKX showed me how much these games have layered on additional abilities. And the games are selling so they must be popular with the majority of gamers.
Stacy – Realism and technology drive the control changes, but the game design and genre affect it as well. Simpler games don’t require much in terms of control, but games like Last of Us or FPS games require detailed and intricate controls. The most difficult part for designers is making controls smooth and intuitive, not clunky or cumbersome
