We had an incredible turnout for the 13th Doctor Cosplay Meet-Up at the Doctor Who-themed convention, Gallifrey One. The convention returned to Los Angeles for its 33rd year last month. It is the largest and longest-running Doctor Who convention and tends to attract many people in cosplay.

Doctor Who is a British science-fiction series that follows an alien named “The Doctor” and their earth companions through time and space. It’s a bit of a niche fandom in the United States but that hasn’t stopped Gallifrey One from running for over thirty years. The convention takes place every February in Los Angeles. Cosplayers arrive from all around the globe to show off their fantastic cosplays at Gallifrey One.
Fans share the meet-up on social media
Fans and spectators gathered in the courtyard of the convention area and shared photos from the event. You can search social media using the hashtags #gallifreyone and #gally1 for more.
Jodie Whittaker at Gallifrey One
Part of the reason for the incredible turnout of cosplayers this year is also due to the fact that Jodie Whittaker was the headline guest at the convention. It’s no understatement to say that there has been a huge impact on fans made by Jodie Whittaker as the 13th incarnation of The Doctor.
In a time where the majority of our superheroes were male, the reveal of Jodie Whittaker’s casting was met with an overwhelming “It’s about time.” It was said so often that it became a slogan for the eleventh series.
When Jodie Whittaker made her first public debut at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 the crowds exploded with applause, both at the Doctor Who panel, the women in Sci-Fi panel, and when Jodie surprised fans at the Her Universe Fashion Show. She was an instant hit with these fans. Perhaps it was the fact that she was so endearing as a person, or perhaps it was just the general excitement over having more representation in our favorite show.
There is just something special and unique about Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor that resonates with fans. In 2020, Jodie was voted Second Most Popular Doctor of all time, coming within a whisker of her friend David Tennant, in a poll of more than 50,000 fans for Radio Times.
Last fall the BBC and Disney Branded Television announced that they would unite to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise. The two entertainment companies stated that they plan to deliver this show to future generations on an unprecedented scale with Disney+ as the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside the UK and Ireland.
Yes! I’ve been going to Gallifrey One since the 3rd convention and I have never seen so many cosplays of the same doctor. It was wonderful.
