Interview: Doug Jones and Marc Scott Zicree on their Sci-Fi Film “Space Command: Redemption”

Temple of Geek recently sat down with actor Doug Jones and writer/director Marc Scott Zicree to discuss their new sci-fi film, Space Command: Redemption.

Casting and Creating “Space Command”

Written, produced, and directed by Zicree, along with his wife and creative partner, Elaine Zicree, Space Command: Redemption takes audiences on an unforgettable journey across the cosmos. Following the epic journey of Captain Jack Kemmer (Ethan McDowell) who sets in motion a revolution that changes galactic history. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast of sci-fi veterans, including the late Nichelle Nichols. Additionally, Sci-Fi fan favorites like Robert Picardo, Mira Furlan, Bill Mumy, Armin Shimerman, Bruce Boxleitner, and Faran Tahir joined the cast. There is even a special appearance by famed astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson.

The Zicrees took a bold approach to casting Space Command, opening it up to the public. In doing so, they received an overwhelming response of over 7,000 inquiries and 1,200 video submissions. This unconventional method led to the discovery of Ethan McDowell and Sara Maraffino, who were cast in pivotal roles. Veteran writer Zicree, drawing inspiration from his lifelong love of science fiction and iconic authors like Robert Heinlein, infused the film with elements of classic shows like Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and Star Trek

Doug Jones, known for his roles in heavy makeup and motion capture, was drawn to the character of Dor Neven precisely because it offered a departure from his usual roles. This unique android character allowed him to showcase his own face and delve into the complexities of a machine-developing humanity.

The film comes to audiences via the Zicrees’ independent production company, Space Command Studios. The studio was initially launched via a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. This campaign allowed for the filming and production of Space Command: Redemption. With this new studio, The Zicrees’ mission is to create inspiring and socially relevant films and TV series. Zicree’s extensive experience writing for renowned sci-fi shows taught him the value of exploring universal themes through the lens of science fiction. In “Space Command,” he centered the narrative on family dynamics, friendships, and the human experience – elements often overshadowed in the genre.

Zicree emphasized the importance of mentorship and collaboration in the sci-fi community, sharing an anecdote about Harlan Ellison and his advice on storytelling. He also outlined his vision of establishing a studio that produces multiple TV series and films annually, fostering a collaborative environment for actors across various projects.

The ever-evolving landscape of creating sci-fi

Jones acknowledged the shifting landscape of the entertainment industry due to platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Furthermore, he encouraged actors to embrace these platforms, create their own content. He suggests capitalizing on the opportunities presented by remote auditions and self-tapes. Additionally, Jones hopes that viewers will find hope in the film’s portrayal of a peaceful and productive future, a stark contrast to the current state of the world. Similarly, Zicree’s ambition is to create meaningful work and provide a platform for individuals to collaborate and bring their creative visions to life.

In addition to their aspirations for the project, both Jones and Zicree expressed their profound gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans. Moreover, they recognize the unique connection that crowdfunding and the internet have fostered between creators and their audiences.
