Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Review

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake does something few titles manage to do when it comes to remaking older games. It preserves the nostalgia of the original while appealing to modern players in a flawless manner. Having enjoyed my time with the demo at PAX West, I was looking forward to diving back into this world and fully experience what it has to offer. It is a masterclass in how to modernize a beloved classic without compromising its soul.

A Perfect Blend of HD-2D Magic

The HD-2D art style is the star of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The game flawlessly combines pixel art character models with detailed 3D environments. The vibrant pixelated characters contrast beautifully with the rich and textured surroundings, creating a visual feast for players. Every frame feels like a work of art, drawing you deeper into the immersive world.

The environments are equally breathtaking, blending stylized 3D elements that pop with life. From lush forests to bustling towns, the attention to detail is unmatched. The visual aesthetic captures the essence of the original while elevating it for contemporary audiences.

Classic RPG Excellence

At its core, it very much remains a classic RPG. The gameplay is as satisfying as ever, embodying the essence of what makes turn-based RPGs timeless. Fans of the original will feel right at home, while newcomers will appreciate its accessibility.

The game’s pacing is ideal for long sessions or quick bursts of play. Whether you’re grinding through dungeons or exploring the overworld, the gameplay loop remains engaging.

Perfect for Handheld Gaming

For PC players, this remake shines on devices like the Steam Deck. The portability enhances the experience, making it easy to enjoy anywhere. Relaxing on the couch, grinding through battles, or progressing through the story is a treat. The game’s pacing and design make it perfect for handheld consoles, and it’s likely equally enjoyable on the Nintendo Switch.
