The Fallbacks return for an all-new adventure in “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” penned once again by Jaleigh Johnson. The Fallbacks return after proving themselves to be an impressive team of adventurers. Defeating a lich, escaping purple worms, and destroying a horrifyingly haunted spellbook. The Fallbacks is led by Tessalynde, a rogue with ambitious dreams of leading a legendary party of adventurers; Anson, her closest confidant and loyal fighter; Cazrin, a self-taught wizard with a dark ancestral history; Baldric, a cleric who makes unique deals with the gods with a haunting secret; Lark, a mysterious bard with countless secrets and impressive musical skills; and of course, their lovable pet Uggie the otyugh.
The final moments of “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Bound For Ruin” opened the door to a few more personal mysteries. Cazrin’s brother remains missing after he fled after betraying him to the lich hunting the party. The enigmatic entity that has some level of control over Baldric remains a thorn in his and the party’s side. This entity becomes more powerful as the Fallbacks search for the identity of this force. As they slowly piece together the puzzle, it becomes even more intimidating once they realize just how powerful this force actually is.
Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons Further Fleshes Out Each Character

The first novel introduces the party and builds out the team dynamic. “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” makes them and their found family dynamic feel more lived in. The conflicts that bubble up through the tension of promises, secrets, and danger feel more complex and visceral. “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” also further fleshes out the world and their relationships outside the team.
“Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” is primarily Baldric’s story. His internal and external battle with the entity is the main catalyst for the story. It is also a deeper dive into his psyche and the unique way in which his cleric abilities work. However, each party member has a moment to shine. Anson’s relationship with his brother tests his loyalty with the group, shaking the core of his being and his relationship with Tess.
More of Lark’s past is revealed, although questions remain about the trouble that follows him. While Cazrin took center stage in “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks Bound For Ruin,” more of her ancestral history is revealed as she grows outside of her wizard studies. More of Tess’ struggles as a leader and her relationship with her mentor are revealed as well. Hilariously, Uggie has matured as well, although the lovable otyugh remains a menace in the most entertaining way.
The Action Is Dynamic, Story Driven, & Cinematic

“Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” is full of dynamic action sequences. The fights oscillate between smooth teamwork that volleys seamlessly between party members and out-of-rhythm, choppy staccato sequences. They perfectly reflect the emotional journey of the party. The intraparty conflict is authentic and genuine, with each member’s motivations understandable.
“Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” is an action-packed, fun adventure. The characters feel more lived in and real. The comradery and trust built in “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks Bound For Ruin” are a strong base. However, the realities of a party full of secrets and different motivations bring an organic conflict that feels true.
“Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” also includes surprisingly introspective moments from every single one of the Fallbacks. As they question their place in the group, their abilities, and even the core of their very being. “Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: Dealing With Dragons” only improves on the groundwork laid with the first novel to create an engaging and exciting story worth reading for any Dungeons & Dragons or fantasy fan.
