FANTASIAN Neo Dimension Review: A Modern RPG Gem

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of FINAL FANTASY, teams up with legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu to bring FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, an enhanced version of the beloved RPG initially launched on Apple Arcade in 2021. This revamped edition was an experience I did not know I wanted now on consoles making it accessible to both newcomers and seasoned RPG fans.

In FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, players embark on a journey as Leo, a protagonist struggling to recover his lost memories and unravel the enigma of a mechanical infection wreaking havoc on his world. The game does an amazing job combining a traditional turn-based battle system with modern gameplay mechanics, offering a fresh twist to the genre. The setting—a universe brimming with multi-dimensional exploration—is vividly brought to life with over 150 meticulously crafted dioramas. Each diorama was a joy to discover and examine each fiber of detail handcrafted for the experience.

Visual Brilliance: A Feast for the Eyes

The handcrafted dioramas in FANTASIAN Neo Dimension are nothing short of breathtaking. Playing on the Nintendo Switch, particularly on an OLED screen, elevates the visual experience to new heights. Colors pop with vibrancy, creating an immersive atmosphere that feels both magical and tangible. Whether you’re exploring bustling towns or venturing into eerie mechanical landscapes, the attention to detail is evident in every frame.

The transition from mobile devices to consoles is seamless, showcasing why this title thrives on larger screens. The art style, blending real-world craftsmanship with digital animation, is a testament to the game’s dedication to storytelling and aesthetic innovation.

A Perfect Blend of Classic and Modern Gameplay

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension revamps the turn-based battle system with unique mechanics that keep players engaged. The strategic depth ensures battles never feel repetitive, while the inclusion of new difficulty options caters to players of all skill levels.

One standout feature is the Dimengeon Battle system, which allows players to group enemies into a separate dimension for large-scale battles. This mechanic adds a layer of strategy and excitement, letting you focus on exploration without constant interruptions from random encounters.

Moreover, the addition of English and Japanese voiceovers enhances the narrative experience, making it more engaging and relatable. The music was the icing on the cake. The story’s emotional depth is amplified by Uematsu’s captivating score, which perfectly complements every pivotal moment.

Why the Console Version Shines

Having experienced a demo on PlayStation 5 at PAX West, playing the full game on the Nintendo Switch highlights its versatility. The handheld mode, paired with the Switch’s OLED screen, offers an intimate gaming experience where every detail feels magnified. Conversely, playing on a big screen allows you to appreciate the dioramas’ intricate designs in all their glory.

The captivating story, stunning visuals, and engaging combat system make it a standout title worth exploring.
