Primarily known as one of the world’s largest independent game companies, FunPlus is expanding from games into other forms of media. FunPlus recently announced the opening of Studio Ellipsis in Lisbon, a new creative hub focused on expanding the company’s intellectual property (IP) across several entertainment platforms. First up for FunPlus and Studio Ellipsis is the world of comic books with the series “Cradle of the Gods”. The effort, spearheaded by narrative director Guilluame Colomb, who joined FunPlus and Studio Ellipsis last year.
“It’s part of a larger strategy at FunPlus to think about our intellectual property (IP) in a more holistic way,” explained Colomb when speaking with Temple of Geek. He also shared how his multidisciplinary background allows him to seamlessly transition between creative mediums. “I’ve always loved video games and storytelling. My background in theater and film taught me a lot about working with actors and understanding human psychology. It’s all about understanding how and why people behave and react the way they do. That knowledge is essential for any kind of storytelling.”
“Cradle of the Gods” First of Many Multimedia Projects for FunPlus
FunPlus’s first comic series is “Cradle of the Gods“, which debuted in October 2024 at New York Comic Con. The story takes place within the world of the FunPlus game “Sea of Conquest”. However, Colomb was quick to point out the “Cradle of the Gods” is a prequel to the game, therefore, audiences can enjoy both the game and comic series without prior knowledge of the other. Though if one is familiar with the game, fans can expect to see a few familiar faces and settings in “Cradle of the Gods” from “Sea of Conquest.”
Colomb cited his childhood in France reading French and Belgian comic books as a major influence in creating “Cradle of the Gods’s” visual style. Furthermore, he spoke to embracing a global approach when looking for artists to bring the book to life, and raved about the detail incorporated into the series when transitioning from game to page. Colomb hinted more multimedia projects are in the works for Studio Ellipsis. Yet, he’s forbidden from sharing any specific properties that will be getting the same treatment as “Sea of Conquest”.
