For the first time in a long time, Gail Simone appeared at WonderCon! One of the royals of comic book writers was live and talked about all of the exciting projects that she has coming up as well as what it is like to be considered one of the royals of comic book writers.
Simone, known for her work on Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman, and for coining the term “fridging,” is a titan in the comic book industry. A true pioneer for women writers, she continues to inspire aspiring creators. Even more importantly, she is one of the most impressive writers in the industry, having pioneered the way for other women in the field.
Held just minutes from Disneyland at the Anaheim Convention Center, the convention took place from Friday, March 29th to Sunday, March 31st. At her spotlight panel, titled “Spotlight on Gail Simone: From Batgirl to Bears,” moderated by her very supportive husband, Scott, on Saturday afternoon, fans got to hear all about the new and exciting Gail Simone projects on the horizon.
Coming to us in November is her Red Sonja novel. That’s right Gail Simone is writing prose, she is already hard at work on the second novel so fans will get more of Red Sonja soon. Gail has also been working on expanding characters and coming up with backstories for Minor Threats, Crab Louie as well as Zack Snyder’s Nemesis as appeared in Rebel Moon.
At the end of the panel, fans were also teased with a secret project involving a giant “S”. Which left the audience buzzing with speculation.
Starting in July, Gail will be writing for the Uncanny X-Men. In a high-profile move, Simone will choose the X-Men team and introduce new characters. Simone expressed her excitement about taking over the reins of the X-Men series. She told the audience that she had been a huge fan since she was young, especially of Chris Claremont’s work.
Simone then delved into what makes the X-Men such enduring characters: “Each one of them is completely different from anyone else in the world and they feel a little bit alien, misunderstood, judged all the time, all of us things that that we feel as non-new humans. And I think it’s very relatable to us as a society all over the world. And that just that part right there is what appeals to me because I can do so much.”
Gail, as expected, was a crowd-pleaser. She is funny, she is brilliant and she is so humble despite all of the incredible work.
