After premiering at Tribeca Film Festival last year, the celebratory documentary Satisfied, which centers Tony- and Grammy Award-winning actress and singer Renée Elise Goldsberry, will show in U.S. theaters from September 30 – October 2, 2025. Distributors AURA Entertainment and Fathom Entertainment partnered to make the special, limited release possible.
Filmed with Goldsberry over several years, Satisfied gives an intimate look into the life of Broadway play Hamilton’s first Angelica Schuyler. Throughout the documentary, audiences watch Goldsberry balance her dream of having children with her dream of professional success. This is a struggle many women likely relate to, and where Satisfied succeeds in its exploration of such a struggle is that it’s not afraid to admit that having everything all the time isn’t always possible. Whether it’s Goldsberry nearly giving Hamilton up to create a different kind of happiness, or her sacrificing time with her children to give Angelica Schuyler her all and fulfill a passion and need from within, we see a woman determined to make the most of her choices — whatever they may be and wherever they may lead her.
Angelica Schuyler vs. Motherhood
In an interview with Temple of Geek, co-director Melissa Haizlip said that Goldsberry viewed this documentary as a sort of gift to her children. Something to show them what she’d been through and why she’d sacrificed so much. “It was like giving a part of herself back to her kids,” Haizlip said, “so they could actually see what took her away from them. It was a notch on [her family’s] timeline.”

Though Goldsberry herself doesn’t directly say this in the documentary, the semblance couldn’t be clearer. With home videos of her children populating a large portion of the film, heart-breaking moments where she laments about what she knows she’s missing, and a firm statement declaring “no matter how hard or challenging it is, I never thought for a moment ‘I wish I wasn’t in [Hamilton]’”, there is no question. This is not only a retrospective of Goldsberry’s journey with Hamilton; it’s Goldsberry writing her children into her Hamilton narrative and telling the world that she wasn’t just Angelica Schuyler, she was a mother, and that matters, too.
Always Satisfied
This perspective of the film leads directly into the aptness of the title itself. “Satisfied” is, of course, the name of Angelica’s main song in Hamilton. It’s a song about regret and love and, perhaps above all, a deep fear of living life unsatisfied. In the end, Angelica declares “I will never be satisfied,” a notion that, for Goldsberry, couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, co-director Chris Bolan said Never Satisfied was the original title for the film, a nod to the idea that we’re “always striving for more, in a positive light.” The title change came about when the directors realized that Goldsberry had the incredible ability to see the light and hope in her choices. “Even though Renée was going through all of these problems and conflicts within herself,” Bolan said, “she was always satisfied.”

Satisfied releases in U.S. theaters on September 30, 2025 and runs through October 2, 2025. Tickets are available via Fathom Entertainment.
