[Interview] Candice Miller, Audience Winner at the 2024 Her Universe Fashion Show

Candice Miller, the audience favorite at the 2024 Her Universe Fashion Show, recently spoke with us to discuss her winning design, “Warrior Princess of Dune.” Inspired by the iconic sci-fi epic, Miller’s creation is a testament to her passion for fiber arts and her love for the Dune universe.

The 10th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show, presented by Mattel, kicked off San Diego Comic-Con with a standing-room-only crowd as fashion and fandom took the spotlight for an unforgettable evening. Twenty-five designers unveiled their extraordinary creations throughout the night, each inspired by iconic fandoms and pop culture figures, including Barbie, Beetlejuice, Magic 8 Ball, Monster High, Popples, and more. From intricate craftsmanship to boundary-pushing designs, every look celebrated the power of imagination, with many also honoring milestone anniversaries, including 65 years of Barbie, 35 years of Polly Pocket, and nearly 80 years of Mattel.

Warrior Princess of Dune: An Interview with Candice Miller, Audience Winner at the 2024 Her Universe Fashion Show

Miller, who previously participated in the 2018 Her Universe Fashion Show with a Star Wars-themed design, shared her excitement about returning to the competition. She revealed that her Dune-inspired design was her second entry for the 2024 show, and she was thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase her love for the franchise.

The “Warrior Princess of Dune” design is a stunning ensemble that draws inspiration from the armor worn by characters in the Dune movie, particularly the suit worn by Florence Pugh’s character. Miller incorporated elements of sandworms, the formidable creatures of Arrakis, into the design, blending armor and scales to create a truly unique look.

Materials and Techniques

When asked about the materials and techniques used in the design, Miller explained that the armor was created using knitted scale mail, while the yarn fur was crocheted using a crocodile stitch. The headpiece, a striking accessory, was crafted using macrame, a form of knotting. Miller’s dedication to her craft is evident in the intricate details of the design. For example, it took approximately 154 hours to complete.

Miller’s passion for Dune shines through in her interview. She spoke about her long-standing love for the franchise, having been a fan for over 20 years. The opportunity to create a Dune-inspired design for the Her Universe Fashion Show was a dream come true. She expressed her joy at seeing the franchise gain wider recognition.

The interview also touched upon the challenges Miller faced during the design process. She mentioned the need to constantly adjust the bodice for a perfect fit. Additionally, the unexpected delay of getting stuck in Atlanta for nine hours. Despite these obstacles, Miller’s determination and love for the project propelled her forward.

Candice Miller on being the Audience Winner

Reflecting on the moment she was announced as the audience winner, Miller described the experience as surreal. She was in shock and overwhelmed with gratitude. The win was a validation of her hard work and creativity. Although she is still processing the magnitude of her achievement.

Miller’s win at the Her Universe Fashion Show is a testament to her talent. Her dedication and passion for both fiber arts and the Dune universe paid off. Her “Warrior Princess of Dune” design is a masterpiece.  One that captures the essence of the iconic sci-fi epic. And Miller’s own story is an inspiration to aspiring designers and fans alike.
