San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) took over the San Diego Convention Center and Gaslamp District from July 25-28th. This convention ignites with panels and presentations across multiple genres of fandom. Attendees hear directly from the actors, creators, and industry titans themselves as they reveal behind-the-scenes magic. Among these panels was Impact24 PR’s “Fan Favorites: Behind The Scenes of Popular Film and TV Shows.” This panel provides the audience with an opportunity to see how projects such as One Piece, Gen V, and Only Murders in the Building come to life. Matt Bowen, co-composer for The Boys and Gen V, spoke with us about the composition process for these emotionally intense series.
Interview with Matt Bowen, Composer for The Boys and Gen V
Matt Bowen is one of the composers, alongside Christopher Lennertz, for both The Boys and Gen V.
Bowen explains that the process of composing for both series. He says:
Writing for something so intense is…This might sound bad, but from a scoring standpoint, there’s almost a similar sensibility as comedy. Where the best move is get out of the way because they’re already doing enough on screen. So, there’s a lot of that. And of course, a lot of times, we are commenting on the violence. And a lot of times, we’re doing that with distortion. We’re doing that with some off-kilter instruments.
The showrunners for both The Boys and Gen V have very clear visions for each of these shows. As far as inspiration for the music goes, Bowen says that it leaps off of the screen. “It’s so obvious what these scenes need to be,” he explains. He goes on to say:
Now granted, the big cavoite to that is that once you’ve established the sound of the show, that is a challenge. That’s a challenge on any show…that is a creative nut to crack.
Both series are available to watch on Prime Video.
