Interview with Regal Robot

Our friends at Regal Robot are doing some big things!  Fresh off a successful San Diego Comic Con 2018 Regal Robot is back at it bringing some amazing exclusives from the Star Wars Universe! Tom from Regal Robot gave us the rundown on some of their new products, including their amazing line of life size character busts.
How was your SDCC 2018? Any highlights?
It was an outstanding show. I was there with Richard Riley supporting Magic Wheelchair and that experience was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! Their organization creates over-the-top costumes for kids in wheelchairs and we were among 7 fx shops creating 7  Star Wars™ themed chairs for 7 incredible kids. The charity then flew the 7 families to SDCC and had a big reveal of their costumes hosted by Adam Savage. It was an emotional and inspiring event!
Our costume was a giant (life sized!) Rancor for Liam from NY. You can see more about that project on the Tom Spina Designs site.

Regal Robot has some new and exciting decor for fall… can you tell us about it?
Sure! We’re in the final stages of a new Han Solo™ in Carbonite Wall Art piece, which is a scaled down version of the prop interpreted in a square frame, and also a really fun desk set based on the space slug. I always love when we can get monsters into what we do and turning an exogorth into a pencil holder was just too fun to resist!
You are also venturing into the world of high quality busts… how did this come about?
It came about in talks with Lucasfilm and I’m really excited about this… to me, this is a return to my roots as a sculptor making cantina monsters to learn how to make masks and such!
So we’re creating a new Custom Character Studio section for the website (should be up at the start of 2019) and will be offering 1:1 replica characters as busts and even life-sized statues. There will be some limited edition products and others will be custom and made to order like we do in our Star Wars furniture custom studio.  I’m really looking forward to exploring some of the cooler characters and aliens in the saga.
We’ll also be doing replicas of production items like maquettes and puppets, and we’re starting that series with a replica of the Tauntaun maquette Phil Tippett sculpted for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It’s always been a piece with a bit of a mystique for me and we’re working with Phil, using a casting from his original mold for this item.

The Chewbacca bust is coming soon… but it lists “custom options available”  how custom are we talking?  Can I get a purple Chewie?
Ha! It’d be fun, but these are all officially licensed pieces, so they do need to be faithful to the characters. That said, we could do custom options like hand punched hair or specific styles like Chewie’s look in Return of the Jedi orSolo: A Star Wars Story.
