Interview: Zack Snyder’s re-imagining of Thor in Twilight of the Gods
In Twlight of the Gods, Thor is the antagonist. Generally, Thor is painted as the hero in modern media. During our interview, Zack Snyder discusses the inspiration behind why he chose for Thor to be the villain rather than the hero.
Sigrid, the main character in the series, is half giant, half human. In true Norse mythology, Thor is a known giant-killer. Snyder says, “I think just making Sigrid, like half giant, obviously, created this tension between, Sigrid and Thor.”
Snyder goes on to explain that the series delves into Thor’s troubled relationship with his father, Odin, and his unconventional love life. Audiences get a chance to experience the complex characterization of Thor rather than seeing him as a true hero.
And any, you know, sort of war god has moral ambiguity that it’s not really easy to, like, get 100% behind. You know? And I think…that’s kind of how we got to [how] Thor is. And look, you know…he has a troubled relationship with his father. He doesn’t really know how to like, love his kids. He’s, you know…like half of his love life is arranged and the other half is like [this]. The whole idea, you know, that, like, he has an affair with Loss. You know, like the idea that…the god of loss of, like, the god of losing in battle is the god that he’s most turned on by. That, that’s all just fun psychology.
This multi-faceted portrayal of Thor in Twilight of the Gods adds depth and intrigue to the character. It ultimately challenges viewers’ preconceived notions.
