Joaquin Phoenix reprises his Oscar-winning role as the complex Arthur Fleck/Joker, now joined by the multi-talented Lady Gaga, who also boasts an Oscar win.

Furthermore, “Joker: Folie À Deux” delves into Arthur Fleck’s tumultuous journey as he awaits trial for his crimes at Arkham Asylum. Grappling with his dual identity, Arthur not only discovers unexpected love but also unlocks his hidden musical talents.

The film boasts a stellar cast, including Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, alongside Zazie Beetz, who returns to her role from the original “Joker.”

Moreover, Phillips, a multi-Oscar nominee for his work on “Joker,” directs “Joker: Folie À Deux” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oscar nominee Scott Silver. Based on DC characters, the film reunites Phillips with his Oscar-nominated team from “Joker,” including cinematographer Lawrence Sher, production designer Mark Friedberg, editor Jeff Groth, and composer Hildur Guđnadóttir, whose score for the first film earned her an Oscar. The film’s title hints at the dynamic between the two characters. “Folie à deux” is French for “madness of two.”Folie à deux, also known as shared psychosis or shared delusional disorder, is a psychiatric syndrome where one person’s delusional beliefs influence another’s. Key characteristics of folie à deux include: Intimate Relationship: The two individuals typically share a close relationship, such as family members, romantic partners, or close friends. Dominant-Submissive Dynamic: Often, a dominant partner initiates the delusion, and a submissive partner adopts it. Shared Delusion: Both individuals share the same delusional belief, often bizarre and detached from reality.  It’s a rare disorder requiring professional diagnosis. The trailer scenes suggest the Joker and Harley Quinn might be experiencing this shared delusion.

Warner Bros. Pictures will release “Joker: Folie À Deux” worldwide, exclusively in theaters, on October 4, 2024, in the US, with international releases beginning on October 2, 2024.
