“The Fix“ is a sci-fi action film that blends futuristic elements with the challenges of a world grappling with toxic air. The film marks the culmination of a decade-long journey for director and writer Kelsey Egan.  

The story follows a model who, in a desperate attempt to heal her scars, takes a drug that leads to unexpected mutations. As she seeks ways to reverse the transformation, she stumbles upon a revelation—her mutations might hold the key to saving humanity. The film stars Grace Van Dien, Daniel Sharman, and Aidan Scott.

A Collaborative Genesis

The seed for “The Fix” was planted during a conversation between Egan and a friend. Egan shared her vision of exploring the female experience through the lens of societal perceptions and treatment. This sparked the central theme of the film.  

“People still managed to move and cross those borders and push through even with many barriers in place.” – Kelsey Egan

The Complexity of Collaboration

Egan emphasized the importance of collaboration and communication in filmmaking. She noted that while independent films allow for closer relationships with the cast and crew, larger productions often demand a more transactional approach. This can make it difficult to foster deeper connections due to the sheer number of people involved.  

“You have so many people on set with you that you can go an entire day working, have someone who’s pivotal for the production, but barely have time to do more than like wave at them or smile at them because there’s so many people and so many conversations to be had.” – Kelsey Egan

The production faced a setback when they lost their lead actress just weeks before production began. Despite the pressure to find a replacement quickly, they discovered Grace Van Dien, who brought a unique vulnerability to the character of Ella.  

Grounding Sci-Fi in Reality

The characters’ face masks serve a symbolic purpose in “The Fix.” They represent the adaptability of the human spirit. Even in a world where masks are necessary for survival, personalities shine through.  

It ties to that idea of adaptation as well. Even if we had to adapt to a world where we’re all wearing these masks, their personality will shine through.” – Kelsey Egan

Egan chose to ground her sci-fi narrative in a reality that is easily recognizable to viewers. This approach, she believes, creates a more thought-provoking experience. It allows the audience to connect with the story on a deeper level.  

“I prefer grounded because I think it resonates harder. I want to make work that provokes thought and that gets conversations started and makes people consider why our world is the way it is and consider whether or not that is the best possible option and what other, other directions we could take.” – Kelsey Egan

Showcasing Talent and Breaking Barriers

“The Fix” was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. Egan insisted on showcasing the local talent and the city’s unique landscape. She wanted to challenge the industry’s tendency to overlook South Africa as more than just a filming location.  

“I wanted to show that version of the world where South Africans could be South African, but we’re living side by side and engaging with Americans and British characters. And that that was just organic and normal.” – Kelsey Egan

Egan is passionate about breaking the mold of traditional sci-fi narratives. She wants to move beyond the “white male heteronormative box” and create a more inclusive space for diverse stories and perspectives.

Egan highlights the need for continued progress in creating an inclusive film industry. She shares personal experiences of being questioned and challenged in ways that her male counterparts are not. This underscores the importance of recognizing and dismantling the subtle barriers that women face in the industry.  

“The Fix” is more than just a sci-fi action film. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, the importance of representation, and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a film that invites viewers to question their perceptions and imagine a future where diversity is celebrated.
